DeSantis says medical mandates are the greatest threat to our freedom since the fall of the Berlin wall.

    DeSantis is a loser.

In a parallel world, the Republicans could easily be using medical mandates as means to improve national security. When will we see the DHS/DOD intervene at some point and say that it's not good to have our population die? Maybe not for this COVID-19 virus, but the next one could be much more severe and medical mandates would be necessary to keep the country alive and be able to defend itself from foreign enemies.

Be fair, the fall of the Berlin wall wasn't much of a threat to liberty, either.

You mean like when the USS Theodore Roosevelt was taken off line because so much of the crew got sick?

    Oh yea -
OR is back to masking inside public buildings. Metro hospitals aren’t taking overflow from the hinterlands. And 500 OR national guard are now deployed to various hospitals to assist.

    Freedom!

Slightly puzzling as OR's hospitalization rates per 100k are about 1/3 that of the country's leaders (MS, AL, FL I think, though check your favorite site). And not much higher than CA's. Ah, I bet it's the steepness of the curve. They must have a proactive governor looking ahead 2 weeks

Well the hospitals here run close to capacity to begin with - not a lot of room for mass illness.

I’ve heard a number of “libertarian” Trump supporters say things like “it’s cleaning out the nursing homes”, “killing people that ain’t got much time left”, “killing people on disability / SS”. It would seem to some it is a Darwinian and economic culling that is beneficial.

Is he? He's the governor, after all, and considered the top guy to be nominated for the Republican candidate for 2024, after Trump. Until recently, he was taking a victory lap for his handling of the plague in his state, Maybe that will change, but, who knows. Right now he's not exactly losing.

    New Yorker article on Sweden:

    Sweden’s Pandemic Experiment
When the coronavirus arrived, the country decided not to implement lockdowns or recommend masks. How has it fared?

They also didn’t have EMS respond to calls for people with Covid symptoms if you were over 80 or a BMI of 40

How do people think that would go over here?

Do you have a citation for this... because that's pretty horrific as a policy, IMO.

600+ new cases in Tri-cities. 104 people in hospital.

I thought we were done with this. There was such hope after the vaccine came out and now it feels like we've squandered that hope.

I was curious too. I couldn't find a formal policy but a quick search revealed a few articles where Swedes weren't sure they could bring elderly to the hospital or even administer oxygen.

This story focused more on Belgium, but there's a reference to Sweden, too. Sounds like some very dark stuff by anti-death panel standards:

I think we hit Peak America in 1945 and it's been a long slow decline. We've definitely hit a peak something, but it's not a good thing
