Alterra's corporate site says they are closed for all summer ops and I know Solitude is closed but Deer Vally is at least partially open so Alterra doesn't actually seem to have a policy.

One who protests wearing a mask because it takes away her rights wants to take away other's right to buy them. Brilliant!

In a place like LCC where there's always a chance of being forced inside, people who have an overnight room in the canyon have the best chance of getting to ski. At the expense of nightlife and freedom of travel and all that. That would fit under "just skiing and not all the other BS" but that's at the cost of a pretty expensive room and no mobility.

In a place like front range colorado or tahoe, the "just skiing and not all the other BS" model might work, too, but in order to pay the bills, locals are going to need to pay country club prices. If locals are willing to pay $10K for a season pass there's maybe a chance that your big big ski hill could feel like Loveland??

Pretty sure that you can bike up. We rode up Beaver Creek last week and there was no signs or anything. Just drove by Keystone and there were plenty of cars with bike racks and such. I'll probably ride up Keystone sometime this week. I actually heard of others riding up Vail already and Two Elks too.

So basically, they can't close the mountain, you just can't take the lift with a bike. Seems kinda weird that they wouldn't allow at least some lift served stuff.

Based on population fundamentals, California (and particularly its major population centers) really ought to have (in the past, and now) among the highest case rates in the country. Lots of people travel to California, lots of Californians travel, people commute from (and back to) faraway communities within the state, people come from all over the world to work in California and many of them return frequently to their original homes. Also, population densities are high. San Francisco has the second highest population density in the US, after NYC, and third place isn’t even close. Some of the counties (like my own, San Mateo) aren’t densely populated by the numbers, except that topography and green space (public and zoned private lands) constrains the bulk of the population to concentrated areas. It’s become the norm that lower income people live with extended families or other group arrangements, multiple service jobs per household, and in the more expensive areas, it’s common even for some people with six-figure incomes to be in tight group living situations.

So, that California’s major metro areas have held their own, roughly on pace with national averages instead of being far worse, is actually impressive, and testimony to how serious and careful we’ve been about Covid since the start.

It has been a huge challenge for places like Bay Area, LA, NYC, and similar places, for Covid not to be even worse than it has been. And it should have been far easier for less densely urbanized parts of the state and country.

Interesting NTY article about how the WHO is not yet getting their shit together in terms of altering recommendations based on new information about the aerosol nature of the virus and its spread

Article about how CA rejected Santa Clara County’s re-opening variance request. I think their timing was poor as more counties will soon be required to take steps backwards.

That one's been around for a long time, and will continue to pop up in some of the lower flow warm water places. People have died from this amoeba at two hot springs that I know of, Goldstrike near Hoover Dam in Nevada, and Deep Creek in San Berdoo NF southern CA, probably others as well. I'd love to soak in those fine springs again any time I get a chance, but experienced soakers know not to immerse an unplugged nose in certain kinds of springs.

Deaths are still trending down in the USA even though cases have gone up a lot.

Mask use is night and day just between stores! In Costco and at Whole Foods, everyone is wearing one.
At the hardware and auto shop, no one is wearing one - and they don't even have sanitizer or clean the self checkout screens!
A customer-demographic differentiation in risk behaviors??

Rob Katz doesn't care about mountain bikers.

Biking is nothing but a loss leader in his mind.

When it comes to Whistler, Trestle, and other profitable bike parks, just cover your eyes and yell "la la la bikes are too dangerous!" because that is the Vail Resorts Way(tm).

Or at least one can be easily forgiven for believing this based on the general management actions toward biking both now and in the past.

    Fuck Vail Resorts.

I bought a Trestle pass (I'd usually just go over a few days a year) for the first time ever and will be buying Snowmass daypasses. Normal summer I'd have a Keystone season pass, make 2 trips to Whistler (I'll blame Trump not Katz for not getting Whistler), and at least 1 trip to CB bike park.

Keystone Beta: you can bike up service roads and there is a "bike at your own risk" sign in the base area, but there are "no uphill biking" signs at every intersection going up (as there normally would be) but "trail closed to bikes" signs at every trail going down. They are easily ignored. The fallen trees on the trails are less easily ignored, although some of them are mysteriously being cleared. At 2360ft of vert, one Keystone lap is all I got in me instead of 4-5 lift served laps. Makes me want an emtb.

With a ton of Keystone, CB and Vail riders having to hit Snowmass and Trestle, I bet that many do not come back as bike customers next year, and then Vail will just shut down their bike parks for good. Frankly, I'm surprised Vail corporate hasn't ordered Whistler to make A-Line and Freight Train "multi-use paths" and "biking slow zones."

    Biggest self-own I've ever witnessed.
Sadly in the US it might be an EMTALA violation to deny service for mask refusal without doing a medical screening exam.

Video in the ED is a privacy no go though.

News these days reads like a page ripped straight out of Revelations in the Bible...

U.S. Should Build Up Antibody Therapy Supply, Ex-FDA Chief Says
The U.S. should be building up reserves of therapeutic antibodies now ahead of any potential approval or emergency use authorization to treat the coronavirus, said the former head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

You can bike haul at Beaver Creek, and uphill biking is encouraged at Vail, FYI. Why Vail didn't open for bike haul boggles me. That is a huge gut shot to all the ski shops that rely upon bike rentals in the summer. And there are quite a few.
