They are actually texting people from the phones to warn that the sender may be positive. The amount of control through a cell phone (nationwide) is impressive. Full GPS location, tracking, interactions, etc. Of course not opt in. It's nuts. Makes you wonder a lot of things, and I'm far from a theorist in any sense.

It’s a real ethical dilemma. You willing to give up some privacy over a short term to reduce the spread? Like you the second and third order implications boggle the mind.
Then I remember NSA and FBI have had this tech for almost 20 years.

Senate clears extension of surveillance powers
The three provisions of USA Freedom impacted by the Senate extension are a "lone wolf" program, dealing with individuals potentially inspired by but not directly linked to a terrorist organization; "roving" wiretaps that let the government track an individual across multiple devices; and Section 215 which includes a controversial phone records collection program.

Meanwhile, Trump does nothing and Americans watch him gambling with their futures.

I just really hope the shit doesn't hit the fan in this country in the lockdown. I just have a bad feeling. But hopefully it all just goes by and we move on.

I just about hit a breaking point today. My fiancé and I have been holed up since last Saturday, we both caught some sort of cold, no fever, but to be responsible citizens stuck home and never left the house all week. Luckily we can both work from home and that’s what direction we have been given. After being stuck inside for the past 7 days we decided to go for a drive down to my family’s cabin to get some fresh air for a few hours and walk around. On the drive down we passed multiple casinos and bars with full parking lots, people hanging outside the bar side by side smoking darts. Then I get back home and see a social media post that the local resort had their ‘employee’ day today and spun the lifts all day and there was pictures of huge groups of people hanging out in close quarters partying and hanging out. What the fuck is wrong with people. Here we are in the midst of this thing and it just seems that people don’t give a flying fuck about it. Local businesses that have been here forever are shutting their doors and laying people off out of caution. Yet there are still dumb fuck mouth breathers who are just ignoring all the advice we are being given. If the resort is really taking Covid seriously why the fuck would they be having their end of season party stacking people 4 per chair.

The Senate passed an extension of three domestic surveillance powers under the USA Freedom Act that were set to expire.

Sounds less ominous that way.

That's what they want you think! But, yeah, the original link was something that popped on a tech feed I follow that typically avoids political slant. I edited the post with an updated link.
I do think though a lot things we were concerned before the epidemic, like surveillance civil liberties and a lot more, will seem less important post-Covid. Not saying that's a good thing.

Cool I’ll read that one in a bit.
I was asking earlier to the collective.
If they are going to go door to door testing as they announced, then what?
Clearly they are going to collect the data.
Not sure why comes after that.
Hopefully the virus decides to take the summer off before that happens.

FB got your number too? They flagged a famous news photo when I shared it. And said another was only partially true.
Went skinning with the grandkids today. No hugs and separate cars. State going full lock down here at ground zero would make sense. Tent cities are being erected for the time those testing positive won't be allowed to go home since asking people to stay in isn't working. Gun sales up 1000% prepping for marshal law. No ammo on the shelves in places.A few people feel the rain. Most people just get wet.

I haven't seen this posted yet, though it very well could have been...hard to keep up. Nothing at all that we haven't discussed ad nauseam here, but a good summary of the math behind an epidemic and why "flattening the curve" is important. Also gives a nice example from the 1918 influenza epidemic.

I saw it today in recent stories on the Taiwan Times, my bad for not checking the date.
