It would be really sweet if there were some goggles that made viruses visible in real time.

So can someone please explain to me why air travel is still OK if the whole world is freaking out about this? Do people not see the irony of self quarantine while their bosses, CEO's, neighbors on business, vacationers fly in a metal tube with recirculating air landing in different cities?

Everyday they are cutting back more soon there will probably be no flights. I think as long as people are willing to fly the airlines are going to take them to their destination.

Airplanes are better than many other confined spaces because the air is filtered and completely recycled something like every ten minutes. That's much better than most public buildings.

I still think people should be reducing their travel to only essential use, but people still need to get around. There are still many people who are in locations that are not their homes and need to return, for example.

United Way Worldwide Launches Corvid-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund
During times of uncertainty, Americans come together to support each other. COVID-19 is a new test of our collective strength. As social distancing and self-quarantining become the new normal, we’re facing new economic challenges. Industries are seeing sales plummet, and workers are losing tips, wages or jobs because of canceled events, business and school closures. Children from low-wage families may not be getting breakfast or lunch when schools are closed.

To support this rapidly escalating need, United Way Worldwide has created the COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund. Our Fund supports communities struggling in the wake of the new virus, by supporting local United Ways and 211, the go-to information resource in times of crisis. Every year, 211 specialists answer 12 million requests by phone, text, chat and email to connect people with disaster, food, housing, utility, health care resources and more. There is no other network in the country with a similar pulse on America’s needs. So far, some 20 statewide 211 operations have been activated, and 211 is working closely with health officials all over the country to provide accurate updates to the public.

NOTE: You can dial 211 to speak to someone about local assistance at any time. The 1-866-211-9966 number you may have seen on social media is only available for residents of Indianapolis. Please be aware that financial assistance related to COVID-19 is not available for individuals everywhere.

I agree with the fuck China sentiment but we should be careful sitting in glass houses throwing rocks. Our animal agriculture industry is only slightly less bad than China's. Our only saving grace is that we don't mix animals, but our reliance on antibiotics (70-80% of antibiotic use in the USA is for farmed animals) will come back to bite the world in the ass eventually. The wet markets are disgusting, but I bet none of us would be any less disgusted spending time in an industrial chicken farm or pig farm close to where we live.

Now would be the best time for the big one.

Everyone home, not in congested high rises or driving over old bridges, supplies stocked.

Our tenants daughter just flew to Cancun yesterday. (10 YO). I am kinda pissed that they went ahead with their trip (14 people), the opportunities for transmission in such a large, traveling group are enormous. And she will be in the basement 24/7 when (if?) she gets back...but I can’t tell her to go somewhere else, really.

Why would Hilton Head be any more or less COVIDed than South Walton? Anyway, the only factor that would register with me on going to South Walton would be slight concern with less hospital beds than home.

It wouldn’t be as far as I can tell. It would just be colder than 30A.

That’s a good point about infrastructure, hadn’t thought about that. And those people will have enough on their hands anyway.

As much as I’d love to play some golf I’m not sure how that’s go over in 2.5 weeks. Clubs and pub-links here have already shut down but I’m guessing that’s more for the clubhouse aspect rather than being on the course 4 at a time.

Yup - that's why Moab closed. They are anticipating the shitshow. I'd suggest canceling your trip just for that at this point...

Opening our club for golf tomorrow in Michigan. I went today and stocked beer and everything else they need when only a couple people were there... I’m hoping for full on quarantine before they run out of beer

It’s a string of small towns along a stretch of beach in South Walton County, FL. The connecting road is state highway 30a but that’s just what people call the area.
