They're depression era kids. They grew up under the threat of Polio. Their fathers beat Hitler and Tojo. Their moms worked in ammunition factories during the war. They lived for years in a steel mill town with a soviet nuclear bullseye on their homes. My mom birthed me during the Cuban missile crisis with my dad about to be called up from reserves. They look at this and shrug and say they've seen worse.

How the fuck do I tell them to take this shit seriously??
Do they have a store that lets them order online and pick-up? That would at least limit their contact.

I did a Walmart run for my Mom last night. She is in lockdown at her retirement residence so I got her on the phone and together we ordered what she needed then I picked it up and ran it over to her dropping it off at the door. Only problem for me was the damn Walmart guy who brought it to my car had no social distancing skills.

Re getting them to get it - I told my mom to watch PBS BBC America and World News Tonight. I think they give a concise non-emotional account of daily world events. Thought that might help her see the bigger picture.

Still no known cases in Walla Walla county but my throat is feeling scatchy......

It's a worse case scenario which can be dismissed. The Imperial College models partial mitigation (Italy) and total mitigation/suppression (Singapore/Taiwan).

    The numbers aren't pretty.

The numbers also assume substantial compliance by population. Given that 56% of the US feels measures are overboard (25% for Canada) those assumptions seem optimistic,

We live in New Rochelle and boyfriend works in NYC.
He felt ill with flu like symptoms on Friday and we took him to ER on Saturday.
Hospital knew we were coming in with flu like symptoms so a nurse met with us in the parking lot handed us masks to wear and escorted us into an isolated room.
They did flu tests first which came out negative so they took chest x-ray (came out clean) and more swabs for coronavirus tests.
We were sent home to self quarantine since Saturday and still waiting on the results.
They said it normally 2-3 days but now there's no time frame.
I started feeling sick with the same symptoms since Sunday and we are both working from home.
We have enough food, groceries, supplies and medicine.
Just waiting to hear the results.

Our little resort in NC had some J1's from Peru. Borders were closed with about 24 hours notice and they are in NC quarrantined waiting on re-entry.

If you can find it, ammo prices are through the roof. 5.56/.223 is over $1.00 per round, and Lake City is over $1.50/round. .308 over $2.00.

Are these words put in your mouth? This has been your response when people have questioned use of terms like "Chinese flu" or "kung flu". And I didn't have to do more than 3 seconds of searching to find them. But I'm sure you'll just call this white knighting or call me a SJW. Or did I just put words in your mouth?

It's fine to say that the virus is from China, but calling it the Chinese flu or kung flu is different. It spreads racism, it makes it a problem of "the other" that we are being forced to address. And I suspect that people of Chinese descent here are seeing very real impacts from that. Yes, we're smart enough to not treat a Chinese-American poorly because of the "Chinese flu", but do you think that's the case everywhere.

i'm fine, just calling out deplorable behavior as deplorable. Let me know if it's still funny now that the details are painted in. Last I heard, punching down = not funny.
