What to do in Hokkaido when there's no snow?

As you may or may not have seen, it's an abysmal ski year in Japan. Figures this would be when I finally have tickets booked in February. While I'm still holding out hope for a few good storms, I'm trying to think of alternatives to downhill/touring. Anybody have any good non-skiing experiences on Hokkaido? Any strong recommendations? I'd be particularly stoked for active things (hiking, XC skiing, etc.)

    Cheers,
    Dan

There's a decent zoo. And hot springs.

I would go on a food and sake bender.

Sapporo seems like it would be fun.
BTW, their shitty year is still at about 200" so far a Niseko, I read. Don't know if that's top/mid/bottom but that means some pretty good skiing can be had. Especially if that's the parking lot total.
    No longer stuck.

Indeed, I just got after a two week trip. Isn’t a big year for blower pow but all the mountain is skiable and skiing well

Tokachidake, fun alpine if it’s clear, great onsens. We had good snow when niseko was dry last year. Sample ramen

I would slay the living fuck out of Hokkaido, even if there was no snow. It would make a shinjuku tsunami seem like a kiddy pool.

So basically, there should be a place where monkeys deliver me ramen and alcohol while in a hot spring. Doesn't sound so bad.

If you can surf, and have a thick wetsuit, there are some waves...

I skied the first two weeks of January there. Way less snow than normal but still absolutely worth skiing. I skied mostly powder, but did hike for it most days. The Onsens are as deep and warm as ever.

At the end of our trip we did some city tourism in Osaka/Nara/Kyoto for a few days which I highly recommend if you are into that. Cheap flight from Sapporo.

Nearly page 2 and no one has mentioned tentacle porn?

OP: skiing should be fine. They're having a bad year but that's relative to it being awesome all the time.
