^^^Sometimes in the heat of the moment, a simple solution like that is not always discovered.

I get it. It's that kind of panic that leads to the creation of less than desirable solutions. Like snowshoes.

Lulz. I grew up beating around on skinny skis on the hill above our farm. The best part was the VAST trail. We built a jump just off the trail so we could bomb down it and then go off onto the jump. Epic Wipeouts in the field.

I followed a pair of slowshoers to the top of the FUCKING BIRTHDAY CHUTES earlier this year. They postholed 3000' of skinner then turned around and postholed it on the way down.
A few years ago we can across a dude who had just centerpunched Bonkers on slowshoes. From the top of the diving board straight down, one 2000' trench. Of course he has followed the skinner up, conscientiously destroying each and every kickturn.

Some of the gnarliest diggers I ever took on snow were on skinny XC skis sending it down steep-ish groomed trails or jumping off small cornices or kickers with friends. Live in the backseat and die by the backseat. Taking turns at speed with no edges is always fun, sometimes you just can't step around fast enough to make it and just plant yourself in the side of the trail and tomahawk with the skinny sticks and giant poles flapping around. The worst was always when skis would shoot out from under you and you'd land ass first on hardpack while wearing a speedsuit... Great cushioning right there!

^ lol, there is a weird class of local idiot who knows only 3 trailheads (invariably lake blanche / broads, white pine, olympus) and flatly refuses to use any others despite conditions, hazard, temperature, time of year...

You could always use the snowshoes to get to that hot back country tubing spot.

That we did. My ass still stings at the thought. I still have a hole in my thigh from getting skewered with a broken carbon pole. Good times...
I really miss cruising along on cold sunny trails on skate skis though, that shit is all time!

There was once a girl with some snowshoes
We rode across country on choo choos
    She then ran away
    to join the ballet
I hear she now only wears tutus.
    No longer stuck.

Not too far off. I've got a picture from the archives with an equally as slickly loaded pack.
