They were top quality songwriters in an era where rock musicians actually wrote most of their own music, as well as solid studio musicians. I haven't really listened to them since high school, and I get why people who prefer more aggressive music get annoyed by the soft-rock vibe, but they were really, really good at their craft.

And I will put the dualing guitar solo in Hotel California up as one of the greatest rock guitar solos of all time. The phrasing and tone is perfect, and the way they play off each other while each keeping their own personality is unmatched. The song is overplayed to death, but I can still listen to that solo and appreciate it every time.

It's along the lines of "real men don't eat quiche."

What Peg said. They are/were very talented musicians and the basis for much music today.

One of my favorite beginning lines of any tune at anytime: "I like the way your sparkling earrings lay Against your skin so brown. And I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight With a billion stars all around."

That is a great song. I love the feeling it conveys like a wearing your favorite pair of jeans.

Little backstory on the song from the late great Glenn Frey:

Yeah sure they can strum a tune, doesn't change the fact that tune sucks.

For a very long time, I thought Timothy Schmidt singing that song was a chick. I always said, man, that girl has a nice voice. I was more into rock instead of that "easy listening" pap.
