    Props to Delta, sort of

We flew Delta just before new years and four of our bags didn't arrive on time. Three ski bags and one boot bag. Most of our ski gear was packed with the gear. That's the sucky part. The good news is that they got us our bags the next day so we only had to rent for one day. They didn't give us any grief for purchases made and rental expenses. We didn't go nuts with purchases (thanks for the new goggles, though). I submitted the receipts when we got home and got a reply the next morning approving the expenses. Less than a week later we got the check.

It sucks having delayed luggage, but at least they stepped up and covered our expenses without a hassle.

A pair of size 27 boots, a pair of ski pants, a set of long underwear, a pair of socks and a puffy will easily fit in a standard carry on suitcase. Wear the jacket, gloves and ski cap in the pockets and you're good to go except for skis if your baggage is delayed. Unless you prefer rental boots and shopping for replacement gear instead of skiing.

I think airlines do that shit on purpose if they're worried about weight or space. They didn't lose shit, they delayed it for whatever reason.
    No longer stuck.

I'm headed to Norway in a couple months, and SAS asks you to specifically request space on the plane ahead of time for sports equipment like skis, I think to avoid exactly what you're describing: 15 bros all want to bring their ski bags, there isn't enough space, so some of the bags make it to the destination on the next flight.

Yup, priority space in carry-on goes to boots, shell layers, toiletries and electronics. In that order.

It might be better since they started flying a 400 but Air Canada does this all the time into Smithers because a Dash 8/300 as configured can't carry all the stuff the passengers are entitled to bring, happens to hunters, steelehead fishemen , last frontier heli, Skeena cat ski, Burnie hut, AC has had to chopper a load of skis into burnie which cost them 1200 $

Also if you took a bunch of connections say 4 flights to get here from say Durango I bet your skis were only in the same plane as you maybe once, I suggest if you can wait a day for your shit to catch up it might be good idea

usually your gear is coming but in case it gets lost what I would never ever do is check my ski boots cuz if those got lost I am fucked for skiing, between buying new shells/ intuitions/ fitting/ just finding the next boot and it would all cost 1500 $ to duplicate so they get carried on in my 40L ski pack

Unless you're flying on a ghetto low-cost airline, you're allowed 1 carry-on and 1 'personal item.' For me this means the carry on is my backpack with travel essentials in it (headphones, food, water bottle, pornographic materials), and the personal item is the boots.

If you're flying on said ghetto low-cost airlines, they make you pay $50 for a personal item - so wear your boots, stick your shoes in your free carry-on backpack, change once the plane is in the air and fuck the man.

There was a thread here back in the day of how to travel like a boss.

Good on Delta for fixing their fuckup. You're still a jong for checking your boots and clothes.

Other pro-tip for the low cost airlines: most of the time they're full flights or overbooked so they'll gate check your bag for free to speed up boarding. Pack everything in carry-ons and check it at the gate.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

electronics go in my person item bag, along with my pills. (If I'm flying with an oversized carryon I skip the personal item and put pills in the carryon. Then if the attendant wants me to gate check the bag I open the bag and start looking for all the pills--it's a lot of pills--and they tend to give up and let me carry it on.)

Kind of a pain to take them off to go through security, though.

Over the years I’ve heard all sorts of sob stories.

I’ve gotten to the point when finished fitting boots, I hand them over and say something like this.... “these are now your carry on. Cram a toothbrush and baiting suit in here. If these get lost/bumped you’re screwed...”

Yesterday was epic at Teton Village. You could have skied in jeans and had a great day.

Some years ago, a customer followed this sage advise and his (the whole family actually) shit got bumped. He went to the Jackson KMart and purchased crappy nylon pants, jacket, gloves, etc. Conditions were great and he killed it. All he had was his boots.

Bingo, if by pornographic material you mean essential ski and backcountry gear!

Delta did this for me last season when coming into Reno en route to Heavenly. Snow closed the roads to Tahoe that evening so renting was the only option even though the luggage arrived later that day; they surprisingly reimbursed me for two days rentals and even nice gloves, as mine were stuffed in my checked boots. Was flying on miles, have their expensive amex, but am not diamond, so not sure if any of that factored in.

I used to spend massively on it, but with them devaluing the miles each year, it started to frustrate me. Switched mostly to Southwest because companion pass means the wife and I can fly to DEN for skiing for less than half what Delta would have charged, given the free ticket for her and ability to check our skis+boots as one of our four free bags. I do greatly miss Delta's ability to track your luggage at each scanning point; Southwest is more like hey, if your bag shows up at your destination, it's a good day.

    Sort of.
There are maximum take-off weights at airports. Mountain airports get even trickier, as you then see weight penalties... which gets added to with de-icer, etc. So, yeah, bump the bags or bump a few passengers.
