RIP neil peart. the GOAT in my book. Gonna spend a day jamming and reminiscing today. huge fan, seen them 9 times starting with moving pictures tour and finishing with R40. I probably spent more hours jamming rush than any other band in my teen years.

Rush was my favorite band since I saw 'em at the Cow Palace back in 1980 on the Permanent Waves tour. Seen at least 1 show on every tour since, close to 30 total, and they never failed to impress.
Heading to Canada in the AM and had already pulled a Rush t-shirt to wear on the plane (no lie).

Saw them for the first time when I was 15 in Providence on 4 hours notice of getting a ticket. Moving pictures tour. 1981 probably. Amazing show.

Saw that tour at Madison Square Garden. Blew my fragile 17 year old mind.

yea, i was there too. their first time in that room.

His life was not without tragedy. His book 'Ghost Rider:Travels on a Healing Road' gives an insight into the forces that made him arguably the best rock drummer in the world and his inner strength to survive events that would destroy lesser men.

yea, i remember when rush came back in 2002 with vapour trails. only then learned that neil had lost his daughter and then his partner 5 years earlier rapid succession;
at that point could fully appreciate what it meant for rush to be back. caught 4 shows on that fantastic tour.
i still look back on the release of permanent waves and then seeing rush during that last tour playing theaters (palladium NYC may 8, 1980) as a turning point in my musical life. as i posted elsewhere that album still sounds fresh. so easy to focus on neil's ever-amazing yet tasteful drumming, but imagine RUSH without his lyrics and his contribution looms that much larger. and props to neil for disavowing ayn rand.

When I was in 9th grade my English teacher assigned us all to go home and listen to our favorite band and write down the lyrics to our favorite song. I chose "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult off of Fire of Unknown Origin. I thought I'd chosen the best song and that the teacher would read the lyrics out loud in class. Alas, it was the stoner dude who picked "The Trees" from Rush who had his song lyrics read out loud. The teacher, who was an aging hippy and had never heard of Rush, really dug the socio-political statement that Peart's lyrics made and the vivid story of struggle between the haves and have-nots that the song illustrated. That was when I learned that Rush was deep as fuck, not just modern prog rock gods.



I think I may have to finally take a train to Bangkok now...

Was not a big fan of Rush. That is until I saw them live at the Montreal Forum in '91. Roll the Bones tour. Blew my mind. How could 3 dudes make so much noise! Neil was one of the luminaries of that unique time and place in pop music history where musicianship and skill mattered. you'd argue with you buddies over who was the best drummer, guitarist etc. And you couldn't have the best drummer conversation without Neil Peart being in the mix.

Had his condition been made public? I had stopped following the band closely but I recall it striking me as weird that Rush had stopped playing.

Gord Downie, Neil Peart, not to mention a weird a weird rash of brain cancer diagnosis here in Smithers... enough already.

Grace is my personal favorite album. I couldn't count the number of hours I listened to it for a million bucks. Just something about it.

yea i played the hell out of that one for months after it came out. a unique album in their discography.
i remember finding it really cool how the band was able to put out an album that fit in with a lot of the new wave-post punk of the time (a preview of that on signals, especially vital signes and new world man), that was at the same time very dystopic and proggy. that one was a sort of peak in their increasingly techy 80's period. i was disappointed with what followed in power windows, and hold your fire etc...until they did another re-set with counterpoints - and returned to a more epic, guitar-centered sound..

I pretty much lost interest in Rush after Power Windows.
Watching all the live footage folks have been posting of their post-Power Windows live shows in the wake of Peart's passing makes me regret that I more or less wrote them off and never saw them after that point.

One thing I think is telling about Rush is that they continued to be stadium rockers (selling out large venues) throughout their career. They never really had that end-of-career slump that a lot of stadium bands from that era suffered (thinking about Blue Oyster Cult who now play Indian Casinos and fairgrounds, for example).

Rush pretty much hit the stadium mark and stayed there until they called it quits. That's quite a feat for a band, regardless of genre. And the fact that it was only 3 of them (no back-up singers or touring musiicans) is even more of a testament to their talent and perhaps one of the reasons for their longevity.

So just a personal observation of the band as a whole. Having seen them live since 1987 I will say that their energy and performance actually got better over the years. Their light shows were always impressive but found them to be a bit boring on stage. Jump forward to the late 90-2000s and you could tell they were just hanging out with their buds and having a blast.
