Home Title Theft- is this a real thing?
I keep hearing these ads on Sirius XM radio. Is this a real thing, or are they just trying to scare the Fox/CNN/CNBC listeners?
It sure sounds like bullshit to me. How could someone just do a title search and claim they own my home?
Anyone know the answer?

Sounds like it's a real thing. Don't know how common it is. https://www.kiplinger.com/article/re...eed-theft.html
Also sounds like the tipoff is when you stop getting utility bills, property tax bills, and rent checks. Unlike other stolen property it shouldn't be hard to locate the stolen house but I suppose you would have to hire a lawyer to straighten things out. BTW--as usual, google has more info than TGR. I would think the people who are really screwed are people who buy the stolen property from the thief, or more likely, their title company. But then I'm not a lawyer.
This is not what the ad is talking about but a lot of black families in the South have lost land because of lack of title for properties their families have lived on since Reconstruction and because of problems with the inheritance of the land due to lack of access to legal services to draw up valid wills and such.
