    2020 FISH SQUEEZING EXTRAVAGANZA!!

    Report from the Big Hole

Spent 2 days on the Big Hole with SFB and Average Joe

First day was tough with multiple thunderstorms rolling through plus a challenging canyon with lots of rocks making the rowers job not fun. Having said that Joe brought a nice cutthroat into the boat.

Second day was beyond awesome. SFB was chucking meat, I was being lazy with my big foamy hoppers, but Average Joe went technical with a double dry setup. He slayed it with a trifecta of cutthroat, brown, & rainbow; multiples of each. Teeny tiny flys were the winner, we are talking a #22 Royal Wolff up front followed by a #26 Parachute Adams. I’m not even sure my eyesight is capable of tying those on. But those trout sure gobbled them up. Again, I will have to wait for SFB for good pics.

No Swimmy or Bunion? I thought that drift location was "secret".

In other non salmonid news, I caught a 22 inch northern pike on a 6 weight fly rod while fishing on Fox Lake, WI. I am not sure who was the most surprised the three cheeseheads in a nearby boat who were making fun of me for fly fishing, the pike or me. The fact the streamer set into the corner of the pike's mouth saved my leader from breaking on the abundant teeth.

    2020 FISH SQUEEZING EXTRAVAGANZA!!

Moved some decent fish on the upper Madison Saturday. Had a few more days on the permit so went back Sunday for a big nothing day.

Was pretty though. I’ve missed this

Bug action on THF was insane, going to bite the bullet and get a 2 day’er this weekend (since I need to live here for 2 weeks before I can get a DL, and subsequent in state FL)

You need to live here for at least 6 months to get a resident fishing license. a NR fishing license is only $100, the fine for committing fraud against the IDF&G is a lot more than that.

    https://idfg.idaho.gov/licenses/residency-requirements

and btw, there are other rivers in the park right now that are fishing a hell of a lot better than the Madison is.

Been hot so starting to move into the high country. Hiked up to a lake to chase Goldens. Beautiful fish.

Leave next week for a week long, 50 mile backpack/fishing trip. Getting stoked.

Appreciate the info, suppose I would have come across that eventually. Was basing off the 2 weeks for DMV.

And yea, no doubt. The Madison is about at the upper temp limit I’d even consider fishing.

Pulled off up near LC on the way back Sunday night to take a look and it took every shred of dignity in me not to cast a line. No one around, bugs everywhere, plenty of quality targets.

I'd guess Leech Lake, but he is being coy so far. I'll get it out of him eventually. Yeah he released it after weighing/measuring and is going to have a replica made.

Dump for the summer so far...

Been doing lots of kayak fishing in pugetopolis. Lots of peaceful mornings out in the sound.

I can pretty much catch enough sand dabs to feed an army now. They can be fun on light tackle.

Occasionally I hook into a dirty dog. Which can be way more fun on light tackle. Just gotta watch out for those thrashing tails in a kayak!

    Alas, no salmon hooked yet.

A couple of weeks ago went down to Oregon to visit family at a fancy-pants ranch outside of Bend (Brasada). Did the socially distant resort life for a week rarely venturing off the property but did get away one morning to fish the Crooked River tail water.

Hooked into quite a few of these guys in the 8-10" range even in the heat of the day. Beadhead nymphs FTW there for sure.
