So, one vent system i wanna try is something based on this basic operating system (sorry for the crappy example, i'm at work, no time for proper pics of actual idea): Spring loaded open or sealed shut.
Now, I really don't know much about the state of the art of jacket/pants design...maybe something based on this principle is already on the market. Any notes/opinion, Micol?
My rationale is basically when I want any venting, i'm not dicking around with a third, half or three quarters open; I want vents open or shut and I want them open or shut instantly.
And I can't stand pit zip zippers.Master of mediocrity.

Here's the how to video of the squeeze open/close clamshell pit zips and pockets,....sorta....i'm sure it'll be easy peezee to adapt materials and engineering to work for jacket pit openclosurz in lieu of the standard zips. Raw materials and a hot glue gun should to the trick.

Any twisting or fore/aft movement of your arms/torso would collapse them, where as that same movement actually promotes airflow in conventional zips.

Valid point, and a good illustration. But I actually meant from an airflow perspective--as in, the key to getting the 'vent' open, rather than just unzipping it and having the flap still block airflow. IME, as soon as the zipper is open the jacket pulls apart enough to flow some air (though not the full length of the opening, so a person learns to unzip more of the main zipper than might seem necessary.)
Similar to what swissiphic references. While I don't hate pit zips, I like the flow-through that develops if a front facing vent and a rear or side vent are open together. I don't find any particular need to pry them open extra wide, since a good pressure differential between the two locations quickly draws a lot of air through. On the contrary, I typically wind up with the front-facing vents set to almost shut if I have a rear-facing vent open at all. (Happy to PM if you're interested in details.)

just leave your pocket zips open (on most jackets) and see if you can tell a difference regarding airflow, then circle back to this thread

Interesting zipper drift.
So glad the waterproof main zippers have been ditched in favor of easy operation and reliability
Hated the waterproof zips
What about a pit zip that doesn’t go up and around the pit. The hard part is hand over head groping for the zipper
If a zip started at the pit and went lower down the torso, it would be easier to operate.
It could also be longer and vent more, like opening the side zips on ski pants when your skinning
Has that been tried and failed? Never seen it. . .

Outdoor Research has pit zips on some of their shells that run all the way to the bottom of the coat. It's kinda nice backpacking in the rain to be able to convert your coat to poncho mode for maximum ventilation. But I do hate hiking in the rain.

Do you guys know that big front zipper that you zip up every time that you put your jacket on? It can also be used as a vent! Just zip it in a downward fashion and VIOLA! You got a massive vent! Ventilation can be modulated by the amount of zipper which is left zipped.
Your pants also contain a similar vent directly in the front of the garment. It directs airflow to one of the most needed areas on a long, hot tour.
You are welcome.
