    Avalanch in Tennessee--Seriously

We have a small resort in Gatlinburg, Tennessee adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains. Of course, 99% of their snow is man-made. This week, they had a slide down to the ground. Probably a first in Tennessee in this century!

Well, you have enough slope angle, a slab sitting on a weak surface (looks like the ground is wet - sliding surface). The only question is what was the trigger?

I've seen similar pictures from Vermont ski resorts where they blow a lot of snow onto a very steep slope with minimal snow cover. Eventually the snow builds up enough that it can't support itself and slides.

China Bowl at China Peak (near Fresno, CA) went big to the grass under the snow guns in the late 1990's, crown was about 5'. Chunks of near-ice the size of VW Beetles piled up at the bottom, it's a miracle no one was on the slope when it went. Could hear the rumble from everywhere on the mountain.

Well damn, I’ve skied there before, on that run. Long before I knew what avalanches were, that regions mountains have more landslides than avys

Is that an avalanche or a thin surficial landslide?

You've heard the term 'ripping groomers' before?

    I think it's that.
