RIP Wendell Beasley, ski bum, patroller, paramedic, nurse, friend
Definitely my bright idea. No one had the nerve or foolishness to try it besides me except Wendell. I encouraged him to go first in case it wasn't such a bright idea after all. I think he wanted the bragging rights anyway. It was around the time of Reagan's first inauguration. The local molehill was no challenge at all. Alternative surfaces seemed like a viable option for thrills and variety. Wendell jumped in and became the first to ski the Alfred Atlas Sand and Gravel, a quarry in a remote corner of upstate NY. It was steep AF with a thin cover of very wet snow over sand and rock, the bigger ones the size of your head. His descent was slowed by sand and accelerated by rocks. Our short uneventful descents were hardly worth the effort but we celebrated at the Old Mill Inn afterwards.
Wendell needed more snow and more vertical so he ventured West. I figured some of you old timers would have known him from his years in Steamboat, Vail, Park City and Tahoe. He ventured back East twenty some years ago. He passed on November 21.Last edited by charlesj; 12-03-2019 at 09:07 PM.
