That blows. I wonder if "climbers" were hanging out and partying in the lot.
After the lift stopped spinning at Meadows, huge groups of dumbasses were just hanging out and partying in the lots. Lots were closed and roads barricaded a few days later.
It seems as if some people (fuckwits) are done with distancing. I was well off trail yesterday when a group of 8 climbers appeared out of nowhere and surrounded me at a distance of 3 or so feet. They were following my tracks and were lost. I asked them to step back and directed them to some blazes they could follow. They acted pissy at my request and wandered off into the woods going the wrong direction, into a sea of blowdown. 30 min later I heard them arguing as they circled back to that same spot. Seemed like a SAR call-out in the making.
If people don't follow the rules they are going to get these closures extended and road blocks reinstalled. Fuck.

"A couple climbing Leuthold Couloir triggered an avalanche above the Hourglass. They were swept all the way down the route onto the Reid Glacier and miraculously survived with limited injuries."
A reported 9" of fresh within the last two days, blazing sun, and limited refreeze. Not to armchair quarterback, but JFC. Miracle is right.

Missed you by a few hours River. Was camped on the moraine after skiing the spur watching the climbers make that path up the Reid. Nice size 2 ripped out the copper spur climbing route today. People Were coming down the sunshine route still at 11.

It would be an absolute puckerfest, imho. The Elliot headwall is a 50++ deg slope with tons of exposure. Several ice route variations have been used to ascend it. Most ski either looker's left (Cooper spur) or looker's right (sunshine/snow dome).
I would be curious to see any TRs of any descents of the headwall proper. Seems like something Sky Sjue might have done?

Not my pic, River was up there btw.
The head wall has been skied, but only a few times. More often it is a big ice climb. It does go in certain years, Doug Coombs put in a first descent of one of the routes, go figure. Rumor is crag rats (a local sar team) posted up below while he climbed and skied just in case... I think he climbed and buried a 2x4 as an anchor for a mandatory rappel on the descent.
The variations of it are referred to the North Gullies. Big lines. I believe Left N gully is manageable, it’s the exit onto the glacier that is the crux. Right N gully is the real deal.

I do have photos but they are on my camera, will upload later. Was on the east moraine, actually had very little wind at the campsite on both the night of the 22nd and the 23rd. I used NF-3511 to access the far end of the cloud cap road and was able to ski down to 5000 ft along the ridge on a strip of snow with some short carries. Seems like a nicer way in then the slog up Tilly Jane, with no one else around. Although probably won't be good for much longer as that strip of snow is going to melt fast.
