Vista Fire has climbed the backside from Stockton Flats to Roller Coaster and Mullins Mile, wouldn't take much for it to break the crest and go through the ski area at this point. Keep your fingers crossed.

9am update:
"Last night the fire was active on the southeast and northwest flanks and has grown slightly to 2,700 acres. Firefighters were successful holding the line along the 3No6 road and Stockton Flats north of the fire and have established a strong anchor to build containment lines. Containment remains at 0 percent. However, crews are working to establish control and contingency lines.
High heat, low humidity and windy conditions will continue to drive fire activity. Fire behavior will remain active throughout the day.
A heat advisory is still in effect today until 9 p.m. The typical diurnal winds create upcanyon winds during the day and down canyon winds in the evening. In drainages running east to west, wind funnels and sharp bends in canyons can cause gusty, erratic winds and increase risk of spot fires.
“The complex terrain, hot weather and winds, combined with hazards such as falling dead trees and rolling material, make control of this fire a challenge,” said Operations Section Chief Scott Grasmick.
Air attack will provide continuous coverage throughout the day to assist firefighters on the ground. Crews will focus on building indirect contingency lines as well as going direct with hand crews and dozers where feasible.
Increased resource availability is creating more options for crews to add personnel and equipment to the fire line. Initial attack crews are being staged to respond to any new starts on the forest."

SoCal Kick-Off
“Mountain Report: Vista Fire Update
Well we are not 100% in the clear just yet, but it appears that the greater Mt Baldy area has dodged a bullet.
We have reason to believe we will be able to operate this weekend for scenic rides to the Top of the Notch, however the 5K has been postponed.
We expect to release a date for late September next week.
In the meantime the area is still under an evacuation order and we will be closed Friday and expect good news sometime tomorrow morning “

Any recommendations for a larger hike that includes trees with this fire going on? Says 79% contained, but I don’t know if we can (or would want to) be in the area. Thinking 12-15 miles with a good amount of vert

Baldy and surrounding area is within a closure area for the Vista fire.
Best bets for big hikes would be San Jacinto above Idyllwild or San Gorgonio. I think both require a permit even for day hikes.

I got a day permit to hike San Bernardino. Should be far enough from the fire. Thanks for the tips!

USFS will not be lifting the Baldy area closure anytime soon, but hopefully get fire out and hopefully refine the area closed better than they did for fires in the San Berdo's. Map:

I second Evdog, San Jacinto for big vert hikes. Start early, gets lots of sun.

Baldy posted they’d reopen on Saturday for scenic rides and moonlight hikes so it seems like if the top of the notch is open you’d be able to hike to it. Worth calling and asking

Here's some full moon night hike stoke in the San Jacintos. https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...hlight=jacinto
Full moon this weekend. Hike up in the dark with no headlamp and watch the sunrise from the summit.

I’m late to the party on these, I have really been enjoying road riding in BH and West Hollywood Hills. Can’t wait for some bigger rides with gears.
I am in the market for some sort of rigid frame that can accept wide tires if anyone is holding something small, kicking around the idea of a McMahon branded Sandvik frame or early 90’s GT. Still trying to get a handle on the local bike scene.

Fire last reported 34,000 acres. It covered Iron, Dawson, and Pine Mountains and crossed the 2. Mtn High East Resort appears to be gone. It looks like to have reached the west end of Wrightwood.https://x.com/Weather_West/status/1833683471635546383

I was just told that Mtn High is a total loss - both base areas, all the chairs, everything….
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Have a cousin in Wrightwood that’s now at a hotel in Victorville. Described their evacuation as “fleeing.” Old friends in running springs. Not sure where they’re at. How many SoCal mtn towns are gonna be burn scarred before winter?
