Bought my first board from him in his garage in Londonderry in 1981. He always remembered me when I ran into him at SIA decades later, which impressed me.

Very sorry to hear this...Jake for sure is a legend.

The men on my dad's side of the family have all had Prostate Cancer issues going back three generations and Fuck Cancer. November is Movember for me and I grow a stache and throw some money to the organization in support of men's health issues. Additionally, I communicate to the guys I work with and friends about risk factors and checking the PSA levels. Tons of respect for Jake and what he did to shape the world of modern snowsports. His influence was felt by the entire outdoor sports industry - no doubt his loss will be felt, too.

Rest in peace, Jake. May you shred the clouds up above.

A true visionary who inspired many to follow their passion in life. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times since moving to VT, always happy to say hello and talk shop. First time I met him was just the two of us on a lift and I had no idea it was him, he said "hey, how do you like your jacket" (AK down), I responded that I loved it but it was almost too warm for the day (probably mid teens) before noticing he was wearing the same one in black. We had a laugh and he stuck out his hand and said nice to meet you, I'm Jake. Shared a ride down the hill with him where he met up with a group of team testers waiting for him at the lift.

Far too young, RIP Jake.

Jake was the fucking man! Grew up in south Londonderry n remember the progression of snowboarding into a legit sport because of jake and his passion. You used to have to get checked out on the bunny hill at Stratton before u could ride to the top when they were the first to allow it....... due to Jakes lobbying. Stratton first allowing boards on lifts was the turning point in my eyes of legitimizing the sport. Trying to make turns on the og performer with waterski bindings and skegs was not easy on groomers. Much respect to those early us open shredders like Craig Kelly. The winter sports world has lost a legend. Shred on jake++++

It's debatable that snowboarding is cool.

However, he did turn it into a sport. Respect is due. RIP

I only wish Alta allowed snowboarding in your lifetime Jake. Otherwise nice job helping turn all the other resorts into spots that allowed for the punk kids to play.

Even though I wasn’t a fan after finding out his business strategies, one thing I appreciate is that he didn’t sell out. I don’t think he owned 100% at the end but I think he had 51+% of the ownership. RIP Jake

insanely sad that it was 11 days from when he was re-diagnosed to his last day

the Carpenter family home and the epic parties were also legendary- the tunnel from the house to the barn with the half pipe
I still pine for a home like that
