Alternative to iTunes for music playback?

Yeah, I searched, but didn't find what i need...

I just rebuilt my music server PC, and updated iTunes; now i get little 'drop outs' all the time when playing music. It's a known problem with the latest version of iTunes, so I'm looking for an alternative. I need to be able to control the playback on the PC from my ipad or iphone (the music server is no in the main listening room, so remote control is essential); iTunes let me do this.

Does anybody know of an alternative that also has a remote app?

Plex lets me stream from my music server to my devices, but that's not what I need. I need to be able to control the server PC remotely; it streams via an AudioEngine dongle to my receivers. I don't need the music to make it to my phone directly; there's no way for me to then get it to the receiver.

Itunes seems to be the only thing I've found with this capability.
