Definitely take them. I think the Boundary Waters is one of the most family friendly wilderness experiences you can get. The hardest hurdle is going to be that the closer in lakes are also the most crowded.

Second person gored by a bison in three days in Yellowstone NP. The odd even license plate schema doesn't seem to matter to bison. Good thing WRG is planning a fishing trip with his relatives versus a trip through YNP.

Holy storms! Also saw some mammatus clouds, which is new for me.

We don’t usually get the big storms here.

Preface: I am pretty specific about locations in this TR. This is the BWCA and everything I post here is widely available and disseminated online elsewhere (check out Paddle Planner). I'm not giving up any 'secret spots' and the area is controlled by permits. 4 a day for entry point 14.

The daughter and I took a little trip to northern Minnesota for a week in the Boundary Waters. The day Beartooth Basin announced they wouldn't open this year I jumped online and found a good permit (obviously a cancellation). The last time I went to the BWCA/Quetico was in 1988 as a junior in high school. Four of us loaded into my Ford Escort and picked up our extremely heavy kit from Cliff Wolds and off we went. The other canoe was miserable all week. Poor guys. Our canoe had a blast and it is insane that I haven't been back in almost 34 years. I called my canoe partner and lifelong friend Steve from the 1988 trip at the last minute to see if he wanted to come along with his daughter but they were already going fishing in Canada the following week so it was just my daughter, dog and I this time.

The weather in N Minnesota was cold, wet, and rainy this spring but everything except the extremely voracious bugs cleared for us last week. We ordered a Granite Gear Superior pack and a 5 ounce Japanese made Silky saw for firewood. Everything else was straight out of our existing backpacking kit. Dehydrated some stroganoff, shrimp marinara (my absolute favorite backpacking meal), banana chips, and bought some last minute freeze dried meals at REI. Off we went, plan in hand.

Our route. We did 4-6 hours a day traveling and moved every single day. Not too much, but enough time to get out and explore without being in a hurry all day. We can get the tent down and everything packed up in about an hour flat in the morning after a quick breakfast so this left plenty of time to swim, lounge, and fish in the afternoons.

    Garmin Inreach tracked our route.

Chestnut joined the IndyPass this year. I guess that is good, except we lost our passes to Granite and Lutsen and now have to buy the ' add on' Indy to get them.

So my passes this year have gotten completely out of hand...

    Chestnut
    Mountain Collective
Epic Limited 3 day for Crested Butte
    Indy Add on

Not sure how well this pass thing is working out for me. Indy covers me for race events that I am going to be at anyway and with my daughter moving up a class I guess I don't have to work to get a free ticket, which might be okay, or not. Looking forward to getting back to Crested Butte. If I'd known we were going to go there we would have just gotten the Epic in the first place, but things happened this summer that we hadn't anticipated.

^ that’s a good plan for this winter.

    I’ve got
    (1) Trollhaugen pass
    (2) Christie Mountain pass
    (3) Blue Hills Nordic pass.
Also trying for Euro-BBI if I can arrange care for my Mom. Bottom line; I’m aiming for 100 days on skis this winter. Not bad for a mid-60s guy living in the Midwest. 🤙

    Learning to Telemark

I have a friend who skis at Welch Village who wants to learn how to Tele. I assume PSIA instructors should be able to help him out. However, he has no gear. 5’10”, 160 lbs, size 10.5 boot. Any thoughts? Advanced Alpine skier…..

Went to Blackhawk near Madison yesterday, I used to do mountain bike races there early 90's. Super cool to see they now have jumps, a wall ride, and trails packed in their very small area with their teeny-tiny vert. I was kinda expecting it to be abandoned and empty. Just tucked away in a suburb near a golf course, with 5 ski jumps too, 5-meter, 15-meters, 30-meter, and 60-meters.

Bought my Epic Pass, so I’m good for Afton Alps, a week in Park City, and half of my Skiing in Meribel/Courchevel during the World Cup in February. This is going to be a phenomenal season!

I’m right there in the dark orange/red, but temps were above freezing all night. Apparently at home it’s turned to snow. I work a few miles closer to the lake and it’s still just rain here.
    focus.

I wouldn’t count on the instructors at Welch for much help. I don’t think any of them tele nor would they want to. They have their system and they REALLY push it. That being said there are some strong tele skiers at Welch. Have your friend ask around.

About five years ago I took tele lessons at Hyland. I think it was their last year offering lessons but probably worth a call to ask. I also got a ton of helpful advice about technique and equipment from the tele skiers at Welch. Shout out to Axe biker for all the help!

Hope to get back to tele this year after a few years away.
