Somehow I have never watched The Big Lebowski so references to it always go over my head. I think we'll watch it tonight. Feels like essential viewing. 1998?

Got gummies?
Almost every line in that movie is comically quotable. You miss so much the first time; it's quite the story.

Nice! We know the photographer pretty well. Cool older guy who lives right down the hill from the resort. He's the one who pushed for the $3 draft beers we had upstairs last year. Still waiting for NIL money for the wife pictured with my friend and almost neighbor Steve in an ever recurring ad. I think he knows I am too expensive, or maybe it is the beer stained coat, bad form, so I've never been featured.
Wisconsin/Oregon football took priority over the movie last night as football always does. We'll get to it.

They are planning on opening Thursday, camp is on for now. Unfortunately, if things go like they did last year, they may only have Log Jam open for the entire long weekend. Arggh. But mostly I'm excited my girl will get some training in.
We'll have to wait and see if they get more runs open. It looks colder than last year but with their portable snowmaking setup it probably doesn't make sense to move all those machines and push anything out before they have proper cover. Definitely not worth coming or advisable to ski with just Log Jam and a race camp.
I'll plan to ski the first 2 hours Sunday when racer numbers drop a bit either way. More than one run I'll ski Saturday also.Last edited by uglymoney; 11-23-2024 at 10:49 AM.

I knew there was a Harry joke in there somewhere.
Looks like guns are firing now. Less than ideal conditions (26.5 degree wetbulb in Iron River), but it is a start!

hi, guys -
06:00am Central, Monday, November 25th ;
reportedly 28F in Iron River, with 98% humidity
( I don't know where ugly- gets his "wet bulb" Temp. reading, or I would include that )
Light snowfall this morning on the west end, with more forecast for mid-day as the Temp. rises to the low 30sF ;
The Temp. is forecast to rise into the low 30sF today at Iron River, before dropping back into the 20sF after Ten.pm tonight.
then, for the rest of the week, the forecast is for the Temp. to be in the 20sF and teensF through the week, with a high Temp. of 29F on Wednesday ;
my experience is now a decade old, and we are all getting older, but in my experience, if they had 48hours of favorable weather, the "Snow Crew" at SkiBrule would have LogJam Open for Thanksgiving Camp.
( He will be ' grooming it out' before dawn on Thursday, but If the forecast is True, I believe there will be skiing at Brule on Thursday ! )
Good luck !
have Fun !
( Please) Be Safe !

Hey SkiJ,
What are your thoughts/predictions on the Ironwood area?
I’m thinking about using my Lutsen pass at Snow River (former Indianhead?) on Friday, then hit Iron River on Saturday.
I am very flexible, I will go wherever the snow is.

hey, Harry -
on-line, Snowriver says they started snowmaking Saturday night ;
it's been warm, so they had a couple hours Saturday night / Early Sunday ( before 09am-ish ).
This morning, it was 28F here ( thirty miles east ), so I don't know if they had snowmaking conditions last night.
The last two seasons, they have had a run or three open at Black River Basin ( formerly Blackjack) the day after Thanksgiving
( the runs are shorter, it takes less snow ), and then they have had something open at JacksonCreek ( on indianhead mountain) for Christmas
( with a disclaimer for last year, when I think they had a run open, and then got rained-out until new year's weekend ) ;
two things -
check Wednesday afternoon, if you are hope-ing to ski Snowriver ( Black River Basin ) on Thanksgiving ; I believe they may be open on Friday, but I do not expect them to be open on Thanksgiving ( I will go back to the website ( my access is Slow ) ) ;
IF they are planning to be open next weekend, I believe they will -
Snowriver's staff did an amazing job making snow last season - into March - and Jackson Creek ( formerly, indianhead ) was Open through Easter and had (very) Good conditions. !
If they are planning to be Open, they have the staff and equipment to do it.
given the last two seasons, I believe the goal this week is two merging runs, and a Beginner slope at Black River Basin - on Friday
( if this is wrong, I will follow-up )
Please,
Safe trip, my friend -
And happy Thanksgiving wishes !

Happy Thanksgiving all!
Man…we can’t seem to buy a stretch of more than a couple days where conditions would be favorable to make snow lately, but looks like maybe a chance later this week. I shall burn a virgin tonight if there are any left over the age of 18. I’ll give them Harry’s DPS’s to walk into the fire with.Gravity. It's the law.

Snowriver's website shows snowmaking has begun at both hills, reports ten new Techno(?) Alpin carriage snowmaking guns, and says opening 'Thanksgiving weekend' is the goal.
I see no-conflict with what I wrote earlier -
Right Now ( noon, Monday ), it's warm - 31F - but the forecast tonight is to drop to 20F by morning, with temp.s in the 20sF , with a high of 29F on Wednesday.
with the new equipment, they may well get a run open at Jackson Creek by next weekend ;
But I do not expect Snowriver to be Open on Thanksgiving.
I will follow-up from-the-field, late on Wednesday...
Thank you, Harry ( and axe- )

OpenSnow is saying Snowriver could have up to 22 inches by Sunday with Lake effect trickling in all week and continuing into next week.
I'd keep my eyes peeled on that, if it materializes, and if they can capitalize.
Brule is not in a lake effect snow belt but...
Snowmaking condition forecast have improved dramatically over the last 24 hours. Looking at 24 hour snowmaking starting tonight and potentially lasting through the weekend.

for what it's worth,,,
snowmaking weather Should return tonight -
the forecast high Temp. of 29F for Wednesday gives-me-pause. And If they have been making snow for 36hours, a pause may be manageable ;
I just scrolled through the Weather Channel's forecast for the Snowriver area ( Wakefield ) for the week -
Snow is not really forecast to accumulate until Thursday night, when there might be six inches. and then another six inches on Saturday --
That would be a start.
Please remember, Snowriver ( Jackson Creek on indianhead mountain ) doesn't start daily Operation until 'holiday ( Christmas) week '
( Thursday Or Friday through Sunday likely until December 20th. There are just Not enough customers during the week.
No criticism from me - of anyone. it is just a long way to travel. And there are Not enough skiers and snowboarders locally. )
Snowriver is running a nice operation. !
I will always respect the job they did last season making snow and managing snow under the worst conditions
( the region got almost twice as much snow After March first, as before March first - for the whole season. (!) )
trying to be responsive to Harry's post, I do not expect Snowriver to be Open on Thursday
( That hasn't changed. )
roll on, my friends !

My apologies to all hoping for an early season opener in the UP, I put the snow tires on the wife's car this evening. That should shut down the recent snowfall we've been seeing. Brule is probably safe, it gets cold enough down there they should be able to keep the snow guns going.
