ECRC mags:
I just talked for awhile with an old friend that grew up in Natick. Behind his house was a pond that he used to skate on. Has it been possible in any of the last few years to skate on natural ice near boston? for any substantial length of time? when was the last year?

Possible to skate on natural ice in any of the past few years? Yes. For a substantial length of time? In the past decade, barely. Predictable skating conditions ended over 20 years ago iirc

Here on the Cape we do skate on bogs regularly, but not this past year much if at all. The skating here tends to be good because we get the cold of the high pressure systems, but the lows and moisture usually fall as rain so we don't get snow on the ice and it is a natural zamboni and not crappy freeze thaw snow on top. The bogs are shallow so if you break through it's waist deep.
The Economist had an article about how this past winter was, once again, the warmest on record for the Northern Hemisphere and a graph showing climatology for Boston with the 3-4 months of winter dipping below 0C but this year it went to 0 in November and stayed flat at 0 until March. Totally truncated. New England was quite warm this year, climatologically speaking.

I'm aware of the travel ban including their warning of random stops but hear they haven't actually began stopping and questioning drivers yet. (as of yesterday evening)
