The surface on the race hill here is great for its intended use, but I don't think the kids believe me when I tell them that.

Also, I think I'm bringing my crampons tomorrow.

Horrible news from K today. Also heard there was an incident at Stowe that resulted in serious fractures.

Ouch. RIP. I can sort of envision a situation based on the police brief. No helmet. Gear not set properly. High speed. Crowded and icy.

Second fatality at K this season?

    Looking forward to this storm...
Seeing mixed precipitation in southern VT with ice totals way above zero. Bullseye around bretton woods and Sunday River? And it looks later like tomorrow night

I made an Ikonic mistake by thinking I could get to Stratton early ski some groomers and get out before the holiday crowd showed up.
Reality was delayed opening, top of the mountain closed and 3 frozen rutted trails open. There were so many gapers including me fighting for an inch of space and boarders sitting down at every corner. A voice in my head said this is so dangerous and just get off before I get run over. It was a shit show.
Hope that nobody got hurt and so sad to hear what happened at Killington.

I was at Stratton today, and skied on the lift all morning, got 17 runs from 8:30-12:30. Sunny and no wind, firm, but I’m okay with that. I hate to say it but, I like that hill.

Mt Ellen was pretty much as expected, mostly shitty with occasional sections of somewhat decent grooming. Got skied off pretty quickly. Highlight was getting to take these suckers out for the morning, they skied great in these conditions. Click image for larger version.

Loaf is grim, resurfacing efforts have been underway on all the trails that were first to open. Took three frogger runs today and headed for football watching. The upcoming snow event will get chewed up in an hour with the amount of people vs available terrain. Better days ahead

Skiing at 3400' down 2 2k was supportive though layered making for exciting turns higher, lower elevation was firm with 1/8- 13/64" of loose snow to turn on. 12-6" base depth, mostly supportive on boots w/ zero breakthrough on skis top to bottom over 1400'.
Gonna get some mixed precip, I'll be out for mixed turns.

Sunday River was skiing well this morning, but I was on slalom skis that were pretty close to sharp. Got a visual reminder about the importance of self-arrest skills, though, and took a few minutes in the afternoon to make some racers practice such things.

I think they may have thought I was crazy, but then I removed all doubt with a demo that involved a little more momentum than intended.

I power plowed greens today at Burke with my ~40lb 3 y.o. daughter jumping all over the place between my legs. Not a bad back breaking work out to distract me from the the sugar on hardcourt conditions. Hoping for heavy and sloppy white precip over next 48 hours. Even 4” of cement would do wonders.

Sadly, that graphic pretty much shows what's going on in SoVT.

30.6 degrees, no wind and light sleet/rain mix at the base of Magic. Deck is covered in a very thin layer of something...

28` and calm with 1 1/8" of sleet so far bob. Some light snowfall right now, like 1/8" an hour light.

No need to panic yet. This is a slow moving system and isn’t forecast to end until tomorrow night. Of course it appears to be further east than predicted so VT may not make out so well.
