A little heat helps some time when it's thin.

The NWS weekend forecast discussion reads like a guess at this point or at least confusing.

I grew up partly in Vermont, and lived in Vermont as an adult for a couple of years. I know what Vermont skiing is like. And packed powder is a resort snow descriptor that doesn't mean "fresh powder that's just been packed down a bit", it has its own meaning. Which is basically snow that is soft and carveable but not powder all the way to hard snow that is still edgeable. Packed powder is nothing like powder.

Resort snow descriptor? Ha, there’s your problem right there. When has a resort ever given an honest/accurate description of conditions? EC resorts are a bit more liberal in their “descriptors” than in the West, I suppose.

As to what you describe above, those are two distinct things. Soft and carveable but not powder is Packed Powder. Hard but edgeable (and not refrozen granules) is Hard Pack.

If you can hear the sound of your edges on the snow when you turn it isn’t packed powder!

That's your definitions. Based on decades of resort skiing, I'd say that resorts have a different definition. Hardpack is not something resorts like to use as a conditions descriptor. So I don't see anything wrong with someone here using the term "packed powder" in the exact same way the resorts do.

The preferred nomenclature is frozen granular.

Sure, if you want to be as misleading and inaccurate as the resorts!

Here’s how the NY Ski Areas association classifies snow....they aren’t my definitions.

That's different. That's the so called packed powder that thawed and froze overnight and hasn't had the benefit of sun and / or warmth to become "packed powder" on the way to slush.
