East MF Coast 19/20.
Line length all relative but I would say Jay is not as bad as most on weekends. Saturday’s much busier than Sundays due to Montreal day trippers. Avoid the tram on weekends. WAY too long of a line. If it is a weekend pow day , expect the worse. F’kn feeding frenzy. Their media hypes storms and people come from all the land. A pow day at Jay can be other worldly but that secret died 10 years ago. I don’t blame any single one of them for being there, but they all come.
Lifts slower on stateside but always seems to stay less crowded overall. Arguably superior terrain to tram side as well. I’ve skied Jay 20 seasons and spend 95% of my time on stateside.
All that said, Jay sucks for intermediates. Great beginner terrain and great tree skiing. Not much in between. If anyone in your party plans to “stick to the blues” at Jay on a weekend expect very crowded - and likely icy - slopes. It is probably the worse set up for intermediates I’ve come across. Limited blue terrain, narrow slopes that lose snow fast, confusing intersections, crossing slopes and all sorts of irregularities that cause bunch of people to stop and huddle around as experts keep wizzing around at mach looney speeds etc.... Works fine when not crowded but that won’t be the case on a mid-season weekend -even if lift lines aren’t bad the limited intermediate terrain will be busy. Not enough intermediate options to spread folks out.
Jan/Feb can be pretty frigid that far north too. Jay can be unforgivingly cold so make sure your crew has the right gear to stay warm.
Pro tip - wait until mid-late March and watch weather.
*afterthought edit* Booking Jay in advance mid-winter also carries high-winds risk. If a single upper mountain lift goes on wind hold all bets are off and the lines will be a major problem. The older stateside chairs are prone to mechanical outages but there is no way to predict when/if. Not sure how common wind holds are at most other resorts in the east. Common at Jay.Last edited by Doremite; 11-24-2019 at 08:33 AM.

Another option for glades is Sutton in the eastern townships.
Not a lot of vertical, but lots of options for trees. A fun hill when there's snow.
Being in Quebec there's the bonus of being able to legally order weed to the post office.

Sunday River picked up about three or four dense inches by 2:30, made a world of difference after Friday's weather event that turned most trails into good racing surfaces. Came home to find an inch in the driveway, so definitely elevation dependent.
Oh, and roads were quite sporty.

2 3/32" of wet spring like snow bob. Skiing was good if monotonous with two ways down. Gatehouse is rife with parkrats flapping around. Said Hi to the skiing fisherman. Someone fiddling with their adjustable poles lost the lower requiring a long walk down and back to retrieve it. The guy skiing in jeans looked wet. Beer at the crpub was warm and more $$ since my last visit. Still earliest season so room to improve. 3/10
Went to town and roads were less than perfect. This guy came in hot to the access road and kissed the guardrail.

Pre-school laps today on the Marquettes. Such a fantastic ski. Perhaps the best 4 inches of natural cover I've ever skied. Beauty out there this a.m. Just beat the snow plow for turns down to the driveway. I love it when a plan comes together.

Lotsa drip, drip, drip from melting snow at the house in the notch. Overcast today and forecast looks bleak until Thursday. I got a few early season skins in before the thaw and freeze. Sterling lift opens Friday to start off the season at Smuggs. Shortest grooming career ever, I resigned before it started. Got a bartending gig at the Hearth & Candle instead. Kitchen puts out some great chow, the place is a maze of stairs, nooks and crannies. Almost need a GPS to navigate through there. I'll add these stix to the skinniest ski contest. Happy T-giving to all da mags and their families.
Silent....but shredly.
