(I swear I've searched) Considering a trip to VT for our first time in late January or February, looking for advice on which hills to go to, wondering if anyone here can offer any advice.

Intermediate skiers, don't care about terrain parks, love tree skiing but with with a relatively gentle slope, but can handle steeper stuff too, but not a fan of ice. We usually stay off resort to save money, and try to get rooms with a basic kitchen to cook mostly there.

Original plan was a week at Jay Peak (staying off site) but am thinking of a few days there plus a few days somewhere else. Obvious choices are probably Sugarbush or Smugglers Notch?

If anyone has any planning tips, hills to go to, lodging deals, best dispensaries etc (trying to find that balance between value, snow/ski quality at a place that isn't too hammered with bodies) it is greatly appreciated.

If you end up at Sugarbush midweek there Should still be $30 Thursdays at Mt Ellen and if you reach out there are Warren Miller coupons good for a FREE midweek all mountain pass. Smuggs is best midweek due to slow as fuck lifts. If snow depth is good a day at the Middlebury Snow Bowl would be a fun family day.
Check Airb&b for places to stay. If I am around I could give you a tour of the bush to get you acquainted with it.

PassHolder day proved to be fun after I finished some work and wandered over. Soft deep[triple I think] grooming felt like spring skiing in November. Lots of park kooks skittering around doing park kook shit. I find it funny they opened Gatehouse to have beginner terrain and built a park on a spur trail off the only way down. It is nice to be able to walk to and from in 4 or 5 minutes.

No rain, but some graupel and sleet for a few minutes here and there.

If you're looking for tree skiing in January I'd just follow the snow.

    Haha, fify.

No, but seriously, Smugglers is way old school Vermont experience, with great trees. Good pairing with Jay. As a matter of fact, the Smugglers Notch Inn would be good for sleeping for both. Jay would be about a half hour. Now, that hotel is old school. Pretty good bar/restaraunt with a cast of characters out of Northern Exposure. Cheap. The anti Stowe glitz/BMW X5 experience, which is ok. There's not much left in Vermont like it. And, don't be fooled by thinking that Stowe is close if you're looking at Google maps. The road is closed in winter. But, do Jay, anyway.

Otherwise, SugarBush, but, Killington is always a very good bet for travelers, because it has the most reliable man made and natural snow, and spins the most lifts midweek.

Yagoo in RI if you can handle it. Otherwise...

Avoid larger places like Killington on the weekend. Jay is my favorite but it's far far north. Low angle glades under the Bonaventure. Stay at the jay village inn and try to get on the wall of flame.
Really check the weather and follow that. You could get stupid cold, wind hold, rain... Or deeeep pow!
And dont forget NH and Maine.
There are so many places. It like asking where to go in Colorado.

No dispensaries in VT. This state has decided that the tax revenue from dispensaries is unneeded since they tax the shit out of the locals.

I vote Smuggs but midweek as suggested. Last year, I think Smuggs reported more snowfall than Jay and they tend to under-report.

Since this weekend's a bit of a letdown, here's some classic ski porn I came across in the Euro thread. And can you have a better name for ski porn star?! (Even has his own theme song...):

Really appreciating the advice guys, thank you. Jay plus Smugglers Notch is pretty much solidified, depending on weather. Smuggs mid week. How bad are lift lines at Jay Peak on weekends, dare I ask?

EDIT and VT-Freeheel appreciate the offer, will be in touch assuming we're out that way. Thank you so much.
