I think this may be peak human stupidity and political correctness.

I really hope we look back on things in a decade or two and say, "Wow, what were we thinking?".

I can't believe that Vanderbilt thing says: "If you make a mistake: Take initiative. Do not expect others to remind you of their name or pronouns."

Uhhhh, in life you can and will make mistakes and you currently only have to know someone's name. If they want to be a transgender person, fine. But, if you appear gender neutral and go with "Pat" as your name, then just expect to have people make mistakes.

    Pro tip.

If you have a Pat at work just call them by their name until you know it’s gender.

this is why we started using "Dear Sir/Madam" for a salutation. Just another step further I guess but still glad I'm out of the game.

according to article I read it is your responsibility to remember which I guess makes sense if you think of it along the lines of remembering a person's name and occupation.

What happens if I use the wrong gender pronoun for someone?
If you realize it at the moment, correct yourself. Apologize and restate the correct pronoun, as in, “Sorry, I meant she.” If you realize your mistake after the fact, apologize in private and move on. In either case, don’t dwell on the mistake. As Huang says, “It is inappropriate to make the person feel awkward and responsible for comforting you.” It’s your job to remember and respect someone’s gender pronouns.

I teach at a women's college that moves to admit trans students while I was here, so I'm quite familiar with this. I've never had to attach it to my emails and I never did as I admit feeling a bit silly about it.

Anecdotally, it seems like the wave has crested. I let me students tell me what pronouns they prefer. There seems to be less in the last few years using anything but standard female pronouns than there were 4-5 years ago.

I should have made my point clearer.... I think the true peak stupid in our culture is having all of these other pronouns that aren't HIM/HER/HE/SHE. There's so many now, that it's a lot of extra shit to remember, not to mention the discussion on reasoning or the why.

My hope is that as we evolve we will just become a mush of everything.

No black or white or yellow or red, just meh.

In 1,000 years maybe we’ll have some hybrid penis/vagina genitalia and we can go fuck ourselves.

ebonics didn't really catch on; maybe this will pass too

i have friends whose kids have a high school teacher who goes by "they/them" & while they've (the kids/parents) figured it out, it sounds ridiculous when you know who they (the kids & associated folks) are referring to because it clearly sounds like references to multiple people & IT'S FUCKING CONFUSING...

if i had an option in the discussion, i'd say just make up a new neutral word (so, vote for ze/zir, I guess...)

drug mfr's do it all the time for their products -- everyone knows what viagra is now and it didn't upset basic grammar to get there

I think that eventually most people just won't care about that which they consider nonsense.
This sounds like a bad Lou Reed song.

No, I too find it a bit absurd but who am I to say as my life is pretty ordinary. I can't imagine having such issues as folks who feel neither he nor she, his or her aptly describes who them. Must be a tough world for them. That said I'm not entirely sure I agree that the burden of helping these people figure it out should be shifted to others but again, I can't begin to understand.

Really woke would say it goes deeper than just LBGTQXYZ.. It's sexist to call men men and women women. We're all just people/humans and totally equal in every regard not to be pre judged by bringing what sex we are in to professional conversations.

Like it or not. we're on a fast track where binary roles will soon be ignored, if not obsolete.

I have to say I get tired of the news reporting things like "the first black/Hispanic/Asian person to hold that title/perform the feat/etc." Likewise with woman accomplishing things. Same goes for when there is an accident that kills people and the headline reads: "five people were killed including a baby."

Accomplishments are accomplishments. Lost life is lost life. Do either really require qualifiers?

Put me down as another who can't remember your name 5min after you tell me. As for pronouns, it's mostly 'we', 'they' or 'them', if I use a pronoun at all.

And I don't care what you call me, as long as you don't call me late to dinner.

    This is just ridiculous

    /nypost.com/2019/10/22/always-to-remove-female-symbol-from-sanitary-product-packaging/

Procter & Gamble, the brand’s parent company, said that it would remove the Venus signs from its packaging beginning in December and all of its products — distributed worldwide — will have a new design by February, NBC reported.

The decision came after trans activists — starting with 18-year-old Ben Saunders from the UK, who was named campaigner of the year by the LGBT charity Stonewall — voiced his concerns to Always on Twitter in June, Newsweek reported.

Another advocate, Molly Bloom, also came forward, according to NBC.

“Could someone from Always tell me why it is imperative to have the female symbol on their sanitary products?” Bloom tweeted. “There are non-binary and trans folks who still need to use your products too you know!”

And they always mention "a woman" or mother or girl on the news in situations were we're supposed to agree that it was supposed to be somehow worse because women are somehow less capable of handling that particular situation than men.. like victim of a violent crime or broken down car or whatever. You rarely hear them say "a man" whatever... Then it's just "someone"
