Lower elevation south facing was really hot yesterday afternoon. E faces stayed dry. Fast riding with a few inches of new on 95% supportable crust.




Worth looking up the footage from UDOT Cottonwood Canyons from the recent storm. Quite impressive.

It appears I made a mistake yesterday.

I got up for about 75 minutes at lunch time and saw high was open, but decided I wanted to take several tram laps rather than hike. I’m regretting it today

Sunset peak - N Wolvie to 1000 Turns Gully - Patsy trees today. Low angle north facing was skiing best. Sun never really came out other than for a few mins here and there.

Ahh, Mother Buckhorn, my buddy worked for the lift company back in the late 80’s early 90’s. He had his own room at the end the hall, second floor if I remember correctly. Spent a bunch of nights there while visiting from NH. Even got to eat breakfast and dinner with the boys. Alta was so mellow back then.

How's it out there at the mid/upper elevations with these crusts? Cousin and his wife are in Jackson right now and will either be coming down to join me on a tour tomorrow, or will tour up there and then head down after skiing.

Don't want to have them leave good skiing at the pass/in the park to come ski our crustpack if it's gotten pretty dire. Assume N facing is still decent; any other aspects still holding good snow?

I skied north facing mid/upper yesterday and it was fine... as in supportable dust on crust so kinda meh or kinda fun depending on expectations.

north half is very smooth. E facing had a crust where it was steeper (~40º) but got soft when you got into the mid angles. snow was soft up to ~9800' which is as high as I went today.

I'm guessing the north half will still ski pretty good at the mid-thirty-degree angles tomorrow, that's my plan anyway. edit: not sure I'd leave the Tetons to ski it though...

I'd say that's definitely a concern. Probably depends a lot on how warm the next storm comes in but I'd be skeptical of much bonding to the south facing crust right now.

My buddy who's visiting from Spokane was pretty stoked on our ski this morning and thought conditions were great for what that's worth. I was in Jackson last weekend and thought the skiing was better up there than what I experienced this morning. Perspective is everything. But if its still good up there, I'd tell em to ski then head down.

Was up high in red and white pine today. Theres a rime crust everywhere, varying from supportable to collapsing to somewhat breakable, often within a span of a few feet. Snow above and below crust is weak, I'd guess there will be quite a bit of avy activity once there's a slab. Was in cardiff, days and mineral earlier this week, rime or sun crust in most places except high altitude north.

That said, it's smooth and fast, varying depths of dust on crust. Been really enjoying the riding this week, not many people out at all.

Our planned descent, White Baldy, looked worse than expected, decided to skip it and hop over the ridge and ski lake chute instead. No complaints from the hardboot splitboard gang

Same here with a buddy in town from Portland. I spent the day telling him the conditions were atypical for the Wasatch and basically apologizing for not having a foot of blower on the ground, he eventually told me it was the best conditions he'd had all year. Spoiled? Yes we are...

WB always looks (and skis) worse than expected. That fucker is a tease, it looks awesome but usually skis like garbage. And that's assuming you can pick your way through the rocks and not explode on a large chunk of granite.
