WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS and ASSORTED DRIVAL 19-20
Last edited by whyturn; 01-17-2020 at 03:44 PM.
I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

interesting stuff...
I have pushed the envelope many years ago & got lucky... digging a pit was smart; but, the pit does not tell you what is going on upslope of you. With such wind and freshies ,I hope you consider less risk.
That storm reminded me of JP's last powder day ;RIP. He liked to test the slopes with the "human bomb test" ..sadly we all know that didn't work out in the end.
..good idea to at stay out of chutes,at least, if we want to push the envelope on super deep days- give yourself a chanceski paintingshttp://michael-cuozzo.fineartamerica.com" horror has a face; you must make a friend of horror...horror and moral terror.. are your friends...if not, they are enemies to be feared...the horror"....col Kurtz

Finally back in town for at least one of these storms (its been a frustrating winter for me, to say the least).
Solitude was sick today. Felt like 4-5 years ago. Didn't think I would even make it up there after leaving late, and that the bcc road was completely stopped for 25 minutes while some slide-off got towed out. (that was just beyond park and ride at 7:50), but traffic was smooth from there. I guess the 2" snow report and road issues kept more people away, but it didn't feel very crowded, even with honeycomb not opening.

Anyone willing to show some nice spots to newbie around Salt Lake or Ogden areas? Don't have season pass to any of the resorts, so trying to avoid those on the weekends.
Basically looking for some folks to tour with...

tfw, thanks to you and the control teams for facilitating our fun, getting Alta open before 10! It was a Mike Tyson punch of a storm with refills and howling winds all day. Lines swelled a bit with influxes of Snowbird folks and groms - just enough time (10 min?) to catch a breather. Transpo down canyon was timely at 4:20. Hope everyone can get going early enough tomorrow morning to take it easy and enjoy our stellar conditions!

18-Year-Old Dies After Farmington Peak Avalanche
The teen was wearing an inflatable backpack that “improperly deployed,” according to police; Dabb said a “couple dozen bystanders” located the victim and began digging him out.

All time out there today!...good stability on routes traveled, snow bonded well no sluffing. South facing getting damp around noon and most likely crusty tmrw. East -North will be good, not sure if west facing heated up.
Snow was fantastic even off the ridges, wind damage wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it be, nice right side up pow turns. Wind was pretty much non existent all day...Would put it at moderate with pockets of considerable.

^^^^Nice J true!
Yesterday was the best day of the year so far for me. Blue skies, light wind and cold powder. Showed up at the trailhead with 15 car loads of other skiers and was pretty disappointed. But it turned out that they all ignored the area that we were looking to ski. So we set a skinner and took 4 laps tracking up our own side of the canyon.
Vibes to the avalanche victim and his family, father and son out enjoying a day in the mountains.

Thanks man, it's always nice when everything works out. Usually, regardless of crowds, a day in the hills is better than most alternatives. I've had the same experience, even skiing the Emma's, a shit load of folks on the skin track, but sometimes the low hanging fruit goes untouched.
