Fast n Surfy indeed. Ski pen < 3" in most places. Lower elevation stuff skiing the best. West Rus was kinda windfucked. Saw a couple Fred's 11s today.

That empty lot is amazing, ha. For most people it’s an average photo but that is actually a rare and beautiful sight this time of year.

The view from upper Hobbs in Neffs. The breakable crust from the rime event resulted in horrendous travel and worse skiing, but getting there at 8am was easy. Click image for larger version.

I got to alta around 12:15 on Saturday.

Snow was weird for utah, but a lot of fun.

I’ve never skied high boy and Greeley laps that fast. Could straight line anything and everything

Snow, however, was not deep - and the crowds up LCC tell me that a lot of warriors will be disappointed today

Easily skied the fastest highboy of my life. Hero snow, even if it isn't deep.

Nearly full lot at 8 am. It's going to be a doozy up here at Alta. Supreme is already completely backed up just for the opening. If folks in that line are expecting deep pow they are in for a surprise.

Saturday headed out to the Oquirrhs, Above 7000ft found some sheltered terrain and fun surfy turns. Upper exposed ridges and such had wind damage and rime crusts. Below apx. 7000 rain and sun crusts were stout. Coverage around the Butterfield peaks zone was great, and would say overall Oquirrhs are looking pretty good for the terrain that you would want to ski...lower elevation approaches and south facing can be pretty thin still with the rain event and warm temps.

I second Telefree. In the almost 30 years I've been skiing LCC, never have I seen such av carnage from little pine on up; very, very impressive.

Plus, despite what most people thought, it was not even close to a shit show of biblical proportions … caught a lot of us off guard. To our chagrin though, the skiing was A+ of the surfy variety with hardly any waiting in line. Hell, I did 6 laps just in the last hour alone

If I was an emp up there and had the day off or a local that had gotten stuck up there, yesterday would've been a good day to go for the Collins lap record …..

LCC closed to uphill traffic due to extreme congestion. I don't think I've ever seen the canyon this crowded. Cars were parked on both sides of the road above the Bird, with most vehicles on the DH side hanging halfway into the road. It looked like UPD was writing tickets at least. Cars parked along the entire bypass road too.

Even with all the traffic, it was ski on laps at wildcat...the crowds got sucked into the openings of Catherine's and the Castle.

Edit to add: Watched 7 guys putting in the Toledo skinner all bunched up on top of each other...c'mon man #safetyinnumbers

Well, a tad more than 30 years ago I remember avalanche damage that was quite a bit worse. It was either Christmas-New Years holidays in the winter of 73-74 or maybe 74-75 that the entire ridge line from Davenport Hill to the summit of Superior (and probably more than that) gave way in several monster avalanches that crossed the highway and hit guest lodges. Many cars parked in the parking area between Alta Lodge and Rustler ended up down in the creek bottom. Several guest rooms in the Alta Lodge on the uphill side were filled with snow, and the entrance stairway from the road to the main lodge was completely filled. All the Alta Lodge guests were supposed to be in the basement before that all happened. But, a few souls either didn't get the word or didn't obey, and at least one person (a teenager I think) was finally rescued from under the bed in his guest room that had filled with avalanche debris.

Of course, there's also quite a history of massive avalanche destruction and deaths from 1872-1927

Didn’t help that they were only parking 1deep on the bypass at the bird due to plowing issues. At least that’s what it looked like on the way up, Alta was ripping, imagine the best west buffler run all over the mountain, stonecrusher was my run of the day.

Wildcat had the shortest lines and keyhole had the best snow. Made for a very pleasant day.

BCC closed from 10AM to 1PM Sat, LCC closed from 1PM on today, chaos all around. We could see the cars parked below entry 1 at the Bird from the top of Scotties, they were within a few 100' of the White Pine lot. From up there you could see the size of the slides on the S faces, impressive carnage. The Limber Pine one which converged with the other 2 chutes up canyon and fanned out in the flats is a true monster.
Tanners did an impressive job of getting out of the creek bed and mowing down trees on a 500' wide swath. You could see where the plows ran into a bunch of broken trees and didn't insist on widening the road too much...

Skiing-wise things are welded and if you can't find a way to have fun skiing what is essentially a groomed base with 4" of cream on top it's probably time to find a new hobby. I've never skied that fast in the BC before, everything has turned into a super-G course. It was a complete desert in White Pine even considering the road closure. Ran into 2 parties and an avi class and everyone was grinning ear to ear. All time day.

Edit: rime & ice are also all time right now, this thing hit me in the melon when a gust of wind plucked it off a tree...

Couple of east bowl laps and out emma 4. Boissal called it. Tons of destruction visible but we didnt see any instability on our tour. Super easy skintracks fun four inches on a edgeable soft base my knuckledragger buddy had a hoot. Driving down saw this slide off Little Superior. Looks like someone went for a ride. Maybe a track in the bed surface further down. Called it in to Alta Central. Yikes!

I can confirm - saw that crown line when there were no tracks leading into it. Thought it was a strange choice after the fact.

I should have listened to you... ~4300' of breakable crust to start the week. Guess I'll go somewhere else tomorrow. It was pretty though...
