Anyone get out today? How was the snow quality? I'm hoping for some soft-ish turns tomorrow morning, am I nuts? (More nuts than usual that is)

    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Didn't find much soft snow at Alta this morning, the sun was out early but disappeared behind the clouds and things hadn't really softened at all for my descent around 9. Oh well, good to be out skiing in late May!

Y'all just lucky I don't know how to backcountry ski or I'd be the baddest mofo in the Wasatch on TGR with the coolest posted pix.

    Alright you maggots.

sorry i'm late to post this, but i had some stoke to share and i hope that even belated stoked is still welcome here.

on sat 5/23 i went and skied the deseret twins. made plans with a new partner to go up there without knowing about this little surprise storm, and honestly, we could not have timed it better. 6" of new snow + the road being open meant for perfect beyond belief conditions.

on the drive in it was about at this point that i knew we were in for something good:

i had to put batteries in my beacon since i had retired it for the season after mine and mallwalker's "character building" south face decent - glad i did so. we originally wanted to go up temple first (being east facing and all - the first to get sun), but another party we passed wanted to head that way, so we took the twins.

about 6" of fresh, medium density snow on top of a spongey base. no instability, no wind affect to speak of, just perfect, beautiful conditions. the scattered clouds kept the snow nice 'n dry all morning, too. here my buddy is shredding the skier's right couloir.

this trip was particularly significant for me because last april i had a solly shift pre-release in the skier's right twin - i dislocated my shoulder, and after failing to reduce the dislocation/failing to manage the pain with a bunch of hydrocodone, i started to become hypothermic and experience early symptoms of shock. we made the difficult call to search and rescue, and after about 6 hours of tense coordination and rescue efforts, the DPS helicopter short hauled me out. i'll be forever grateful to the men and women who rescued me in a moment of very dire need.

returning to the twin's was cathartic and healing for me in a way that i can't really articulate, especially when we got it in all-time conditions. i've spent the better part of a year thinking about the events of that day, so having the privilege of coming back to the twins in such perfect snow/conditions was truly the highlight of my season, if not my skiing career.

after getting home i convinced the mrs to drive back up to the stansburies for a surprise backpacking trip - here's to the mountains, their beauty, and the joy of sharing those experiences with people we love:

^Nice Work TGapp! Looks Dreamy Creamy...

The Mrs and I need to get out of Small Lake, she had never been to the San Juans; split minute decision to get the hell out of dodge. My plan was to get up and ski the Coors Face of Wilson Peak, as we drove into TRide pulled out the binocs and took a look at her. Dismayed at the sight of face almost entirely melted out - i pouted... Wife told me to give the balls a tug and find something else to ski. Had heard about the Boxcar Coulour off Mt Wilson (different from Wilson Peak lol - dumb I know). Plan B initiated.

Early start, alot of vicious bushwackin' - and i used the whole bag of alpine tricks on the approach - sneakers, boots, skins, ski crampons, and crampons - probably the first time Ive done that lol. Thank Jeebus for FATMaps...

Long day - 15 miles, 7k ish vert (2 laps) and more postholing muddy stream jumping shenangins than i care to admit, worthy plan B? - you betcha, especially after some personal "shopping" it TRide after...

    oooooooo YEAHHHHH!

The exit of the Boxcar Couloir, definitely a cool feature, unfortunately the snow was quite variable , but turns are turns! It'd be one hell of a pow run...

The route once you came out of the woods, sorry for the faintness of the colors... first lap was a mistake as i started up the wrong snowfield lol but fun, then came down to the basin and wrapped around the backside... Green are the decents, the one through the rock there is the Boxcar

the upper section skied fine, the middle skied great, and the bottom is still bangin to the summer trail, though the lower portion is covered with an impressive array of rocks, pine needles and remnants of trees presumably from that february cycle. it'll go fast now down low but you got this week probably...

Had a great holiday weekend filled with skiing. Saturday the skiing was great and I was surprised that the sun stayed great throughout the day especially given my late start of noon o'clock.

not sure this guy was as stoked on the new snow

Memorial day, I skied suicide a few times with my buddy. Suicide is skiing great and is pretty smooth. Hoping it keeps serving up for a couple more weeks!

Sunday was the real treat though as we enjoyed corn all day in the Uintas. Seriously, from the first run to the last, just perfect corn. Even skiing an east face at 4 pm, which had a nice eggshell crust on it was the perfect dessert for a 4 course corn meal. We headed out to Notch Mountain as we had heard about some couloirs on its flanks. We ended up skiing 3 of them and then skied the east face of Wilson on the way home.

you can get to trial lake as of sunday. they don't seem to be moving very fast imo, but you can access a few things from trial lake and it may be pretty bare by the time they connect the two ends which i'd guess is two weeks out(?) but maybe it'll will go faster with the warm up......
