Perhaps there were a handful of winter summits in January or February, but it certainly hasn't been getting climbed "all the time" this spring.
i know the kautz was skied in march and mowich maybe 10 days ago. so figured if i know at least 2 summits there must be a lot more.

Condolences to Matthew Bunker's friends and family. What a tragedy.

    --

On an unrelated note, do any mags have current conditions or beta for skiing the Coleman Deming on Baker? Thinking about going up the North Ridge and skiing the Coleman this weekend (after the storm moves thru). Any current beta or conditions would be super appreciated. Thanks!!

Bumped into a grip of Alpental folks from lift ops to pro patrol and a couple food & beverage folks after spinning a couple laps on the MTB in Roslyn yesterday. I guess that's the place to be these days, even the pot shop on the way out of town was perfectly quaint

Got a sunburn yesterday, which was a treat given how shitty the weather has been on every previous trip I've taken to the Northern Dead End. Coverage and surface conditions are still pretty good, although the suncups are starting to get big, particularly on lower angle slopes. Four laps and a pond skim to cap it off makes for a solid day of July skiing.

So that's what you call a collection of Padded Seats skiers... a grip. I like it.

Emmons route was still in fine shape on Sunday. The tread to the summit from near Camp Schurman is relatively direct but differs from last year (doesn't currently go over to the saddle looker's R of the peak). I crossed paths with a good skier from Bend so we partnered up for a great descent. He is in black in some of the pics. There was plenty of smooth snow up high. There were some areas of thinly veiled blue ice but that was manageable/avoidable. There was a little bit of nice chalky snow near the top, and a few great panels of corn a few thousand feet below the crest. We dropped at about 1:30 and were on skis continuously from the summit to just above Glacier Basin Camp. Interglacier is a bit textured but still skied pretty well. The best skiing was on the firm corn up high. Weather is looking pretty decent on Friday so I plan to return.

Cool, thanks for the report! Bro from Oregon needs to figure out the right way to carry the ice axe. Did you guys rope up at all? Is it necessary to ski over that gap or was that just for fun? Also would appreciate any tips on how the permit situation was figured out given the online reservations are full. Thanks

We skied the White Salmon Glacier on Adams/Klickitat/Pahto last Sunday. It's still in fantastic shape. Consider this descent for your next lap from Cold Springs. The skiing from the summit to the notch before the Pinnacle is smooth and fun (as opposed to skiing back toward Pikers, which is heinous sastrugi) and the majority of the descent is tailor made for charging. You can also traverse at the end, winding up at the same exit as South Chutes, without any extra effort. The only hiccup is there are some permanent cracks that must be crossed at the top, dropping in from above. The cracks are pretty stable, but the snow bridging varies from year to year. Best practice is to scope it with binocs from the viewpoint on the FS 23 Rd. You can also get a look on the climb up, but not as good.Click image for larger version.
