Cycling legend Eddy Merckx, 74, has been treated in intensive care in Belgium after falling from his bike and suffering a serious head injury, the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper reported Monday.
The five-time Tour de France winner was injured Sunday during a bike outing with friends and taken to hospital in Dendermonde, the paper added.
Contacted by AFP, the hospital declined to comment on the report.
“I contacted his wife Claudine yesterday. She said he is doing well given the circumstances,” former Anderlecht footballer Paul Van Himst, a long-time friend of the cyclist, told local television.
Along with his five Tour de France titles, Merckx also won a record 34 stages. In honor of the 50th anniversary of his first victory, the 2019 Tour began in Brussels.
Merckx, whose ability to obtain big wins earned him the moniker “The Cannibal,” also won five Giro d’Italia titles, one Vuelta a España and a string of one-day classic races. The Sheriff is near!

I bet he is still faster than most of us...
Curious if he was wearing a helmet, article doesn’t say.Last edited by rideit; 10-14-2019 at 08:24 PM.

According to https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/edd...y-after-crash/
He’s out of ICU and into a general ward today.
You’re probably right rideit- even at 74 with a pacemaker he can prolly put the hurt on most of us.

I was wondering that too.
Incidentally I saw a dude at the top of Emigration Canyon here in Salt Lake yesterday headin down on a fixed gear track bike and, NO HELMET. A black dude, making him an even less likely sight around here. I passed him on the descent but it took like 7 miles and he wasn't spun out at 25 mph.
I'm still positive both of them could put the hurt on me.There's nothing better than sliding down snow, and flying through the air
