Ha. That is a great first line of a novel.

I grew up about 20 minutes south of Ithaca and never thought the weather was all that bad.

But yeah, east of Syracuse and north of the thruway is an area you don’t want car trouble. Great snowmobiling and cross country skiing, though.
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

I would love to see a week-long employee swap between a chick fil a in SLC, and a white castle on Fordham Rd.

Laughs for days. That's 'Merca that nobody wants to acknowledge.

My point about Upstate NY I think has been made, everyone has a different definition. One definition I have heard a lot is that it is a very small region sandwiched between the Catskills and south of the Thruway, with some unknown western border that definitely doesn't include Utica or Syracuse and definitely not Ithaca.

Not letting your kid go to Cornell because of Ithaca weather? That's retarded. I sort of like the warmer climate of the 'southern tier' or whatever you want to call it. But I'm from VT, so what do I know about weather? There are a lot of good schools in NY, maybe the kid didn't have the grades and weather was the lame ass excuse?

Very random photo there VT-F. I dig it. That place is not far from Comstock Correctional Facility. Probably a good place to stop and decompress after visiting a loved one.

    Have you tried the food?

Well I'm not gonna lie, all this talk has me excited to stop into some of these dives along the way into Ellicottville when I make a day trip up there next month to see what real yeoman's drinking can look like.

Just to be safe I'll grab some Chick Fil A in Erie, PA.

I wish someone would have put a bullet in Genessee Cream Ale a long time ago.

For the male spawn, here is some motivation to consider Cornell.

The generous sightlines across the building make it easy to see through the levels—a feature that presents a modesty challenge for dress-wearing patrons.

First, Utica is absolutely upstate New York. Ask anyone that lives in the Mohawk Valley. Not the NYC version of blue blood "upstate" (said with a clenched jaw.) Real upstate, and they all refer to themselves as upstate. Clearly most of you guys never lived there.

What's really wild is that there is some amazing stuff there. The Stanley Theater is beautiful, and gets traveling broadway shows working out the kinks before they hit NYC. It has a gorgeous old library. It's art museum is insane, filled with stuff like Pollack, Manet, Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, etc. The museum building itself is a modern masterpiece designed by Philip Johnson. When the city used to be a thing in the early and mid 1900s, a few rich dudes built all this culture up there so they could enjoy it when in town. There is a ski lift right in the middle of town (that has a run named cemetery, btw). Beautiful parks. However, NO ONE GOES TO THESE THINGS. As an example, the place has one of the most incredible modern masters art collections and it's empty. It's incredible.

Why would you go see art when there are 311 cloudy days per year? Go to your local bar, which will have like 6 people in it because there is like one bar for every 10 residents, get good and liquored up on Utica Club or Saranac, and go find someone to punch. That's good livin'.

I like the chairlift in town idea, that could be fun, and NYS has more ski areas than any other state IIRC.

As a compromise, or to mix things up, that 6th guy could still get liquored up but then head over to the museum and punch the curator. Culture and booze.

He could even flee on the chairlift.
