Spare tire or hitch mount ski rack options

Anybody with recommendations or good experiences? I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser and using a roof rack is a gigantic pain in the ass. I'm not interested in the Yakima or Thule options. I've searched around and come across two racks that I'm interested in:

Those both look like terrible ideas. Get a box and a step stool.

I used to have a Jeep Wrangler and had a hitch mounted bike rack that came with a ski rack attachment, that held skis semi vertical. It sucked - skis got coated in road slop instantly.

Find another option - X2 on a roof box and foldable step stool.

This. Whenever I see one of those hitch ski racks, I think "What did those skis do to deserve that punishment?"

You can sit on the folding step stool when putting your boots on too.

But that aside for transporting gear it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. A couple sets of clean skis, use a towel and a brush, throw them in back. Car full? Get a box.

Anywhere that you mount them racks suck and destroy your gear.

Yes, I agree with this also.

If you’re absolutely set on the rear rack, make sure whichever option you get will work with a bag and use one. You’ll probably have to replace the bag at least once a year of course.
