I have a couple friends who have (had?) their pilot's license. Sounds like a cool thing to be able to rent a plane and fly to some cool spot. I had a co-worker years ago whose husband was an aerospace engineer. When he retired he built his own float plane, they used to fly up to random lakes in BC for lunch on weekends.
But yeah the cost and amount of work to get and maintain the license sounds prohibitive. Neither friend has flown in years.

So how much are we talking?
What we have here is an intelligence failure. You may be familiar with staring directly at that when shaving. .

Patrick, unless you have a plane in the family it's going to cost you at least 10K to get licensed(are you getting reduced tuition at Uof A still?) You've obviously cruised through Merrill Field recently. Check out the planes tied down there. I don't know what the current ratio is, but 2 years ago, half the planes hadn't left the ground in three years, because the owners couldn't afford to fuel/maintain them (the dentists all have hangers). There's probably more than a few for sale now that the tie-down fees have increased. Quite a few Ak planes (Cessna 180's, 185's and Piper SuperCubs are being bought, rebuilt, and headed to Oz and Nz.
You should probably save cash for when your nosepicker's motor or jet pump burns up running out to an opener, replacing a net, or ......Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

Pretty interesting plane and the take-off/landing distance is incredible (probably a bush plane thing?), though you do tradeoff cruise/top speed because of it.
AK, if you're interested in taking more lessons, I would definitely recommend checking out a local flying club. Usually you can pay a monthly fee ($25-100/month or so, IIRC), and it gets your cheaper rates ($100-120 wet for a 172, etc.). So if you fly enough, it comes out to be worth it.

the stick time is the easy part....any monkey can fly, just ask Baloo.
Just don't forget about the written test, and the medical test....any kidney stones?
seriously, if you can't pass the written, don't bother wasting money on stick time.

My kid got his license--he had access to somewhat cheaper lessons and rental through the Travis AFB flying club. Once he got it he found that it was too expensive to rent and fuel the plane to go anywhere and between skiing, skydiving, and climbing (not to mention being a surgery resident) he couldn't get enough flight hours to stay licensed. I imagine he'll pick it up again if he gets stationed in Ohio or some other god forsaken place.
