what's not funny--wife read on next door that Spud won't be back. He disappeared middle of last summer. He said the town and the Railyard developer were not cooperative with him setting up anywhere. He told me last year that he had found a place across from the new CHP building but I guess that fell through. He's a crusty long time local who doesn't fit in with the upscale new age image Truckee is trying to present. We depended on him for good quality ripe sweet fruit , tomatoes, corn, melons. He didn't have the PR skills of the Food Hub but the Food Hub doesn't begin to fill the void. Maybe the food hub folks can try--set up a drive up stand on the weekends but I doubt that will happen. If anyone knows him personally tell him I'll miss him--although he won't be able to figure out who Old Goat is--could be more than half of his customers. (All the men. And some of the women.)

Saturday’s mission on Carson Pass was a complete success!!!!

The snow stayed soft and the cold front stalled just enough to get our full mission completed. It was pretty darn windy and had to wait for sun breaks later in the day but I think the weather kept the snow consistent and suncup free.

A much needed day after a few months off. Yewwwww!

Was behind this van today with ‘Tahoe 45’ plates and a ‘corona virus is a Hoax’ bumper sticker. Gonna be a great summer.

Lol, I love how minivans have a soccer mom image even though all soccer moms now drive SUVs. People who drive minivans are the vigilantes with their Coronavirus is a hoax bumper stickers and Tahoe45 custom plates.

I never really thought about it but this is absolutely true, at least in California. Compared to 10 years ago you don't really see that many minivans anymore.

Proud minivan owner. It’s been used for more than just carting around kids, though it’s the family mover of choice. We even blew out a tire on it about a half mile from lake faucherie.

Minivans are awesome. I actually wish they would bring back the truck based minivans like the Aerostar and Astro. Also, for those that remember the original Mazda MPV was the first modern SUV, basically a minivan with 3 doors and AWD. A car way before its time.

That was the same year as the Toyota 4-runner (my family got one and it became my first car several years later) and the Nissan Pathfinder.
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

I see several of those Mazda’s around town, along with many 80’s era 4Runner’s, including the coveted 84 and 85 models. I’m pretty sure the Mazda van doesn’t have the payload or cargo room as later model minivans.

Anybody care to share the current elevation in the basin or to the north of the skeeter hatch?

Had an aerostar when I had 3 mini-me's. Amazingly if anything anywhere on the vehicle breaks you just replace the vacuum hose on that part of the octopus and you're good to go. To be fair, there was nothing mini about the full length 4wd aerostar

Maybe you do. They're just slightly tall station wagons these days. The Honda Odyssey which looks a lot like the Sienna, and the Pacifica, etc. If you want what use to look like a mini van the Ford Transit Connect looks good

Yeah but those were old school body on frame SUVs with a proper low range, good ground clearance and no third row. Most modern SUVs are basically minivans with 4 non sliding doors, AWD and a raised ride height, hence the MPV comparison. Many don’t have much more off road ability than an awd Sienna.

For the car nerds, the MPV was actually rear wheel drive (engine mounted transversally) and could tow 4300lbs which is more than a current hybrid Highlander.

Had one too. Rwd with a limited slip diff. Super fun in the snow, especially with the LSD. And the two rear seats folded into a quite comfortable bed.

Thinking about dragging my 8 year old up for his first patch session...

Any tips on where to take a little guy, main criteria being an easy approach and super mellow terrain?

As in “50 feet of snow so he can build a tiny kicker and can practice 180s”.

And ideally somewhere boring enough to not have other skier traffic...

Nah, those Toyotas and Nissans in 88/89 were the first vehicles properly labeled as SUV's and were distinctly different than prior years on truck based chassis. God bless that OG 4-runner (with the big swing gate tire on back), having one of those in high school went a long way for me. Fold down seats. Panty dropper. ;-)

This is a silly conversation. The spare of my ‘88 4Runner was under the back end. There was not much difference between the 86-89. Mine was a 2 door. Sold it in 2008 to a stoked buyer.

Nowhere near the vert that Gimpy posted above, but I have been hitting the neighborhood goods every day this week as they are dwindling fast. Was hoping they would last until July 4, but not sure if that's in the cards.
A week ago this swatch was one of 3 skiable sections, each at least 20 odd turns in length. Today it is now part of 7 sections, of which only 2 are still skiable...
Still, the snow is good for the time of year and the temps we've been having; it was creamy and smooth.

I had an 87. Spare under the back end. Lowered on a chain with a crank. I liked the tail gate. Much more useful than a lift gate for hauling stuff, or putting on ski boots. I gave it to my son. We put 300K on it (and 3 head gaskets)
