Actually, me & Cinders *might* go to SV tomorrow, (tho normally we avoid the Weekends).
~ Remember KW is blacked out on Saturdays for Value pass, so less lines, I imagine. Also, not too much difference, but usually a more mellow, scenic drive from CC to KW, compared to through the towns around Lake, or taking 80, to AM/SV.

Squaw is getting pretty beat up and not much softening. Best off piste still sun-bowl and tower 16/ BA. Broken arrow is starting to get thin especially to way skiers left out towards the tram. Nothing is that good off KT. Lots groomed off of Sibera but gets scraped off quickly. Headwall face and hogsback were open, but coral reef all day. Honestly, Alpine is skiing a lot better now. Better sun aspects and much more grooming.

Great shot. Looks like the snow wasn't too bad either!

Can confirm that AM grooming is excellent--they're tilling the piss out of it. South Face of Sherwood with nice soft bumps once the sun has been on it for a while. (Some of those bumps might have been little kids; this has been ski/skate week in Truckee and elsewhere.) Getting out past the gullies might require talking off the skis soon. High T has been open, not sure how it's skiing. (The website is not showing it open today.)
Talking about the grooming is sad.

Get it quick east winds on the way. Heavenly has upped the ante and decided not to show snowfall amounts less than 11". Baller move IMO.

Anybody know much about the brine that caltrans has been spraying on the highways this winter? Like what’s the purpose and how’s it going to affect my vehicle (eg, more rust?)?

Noticed how salty our car was on our drive home. Figured it was the miles through Nevada. Sitting now in a car wash line at home. My son is stoked.
KW was a lot of fun yesterday. My kid was a lot of fun. He just wanted to rip challenging lines and search out the untracked 1”. Finished the day with a hike OB to upper Fawn Ridge to the line just before Mini Temple. Skied stop the pillow/spine line right back to the base of 4. And then a lap through Thunder Saddle to the chute left of the Handrail. Surprisingly good snow yesterday. Thunder Saddle has been skiing so well the past few weeks considering snowfall amounts.

My understanding is that they use magnesium chloride

Did some touring in Desolation on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Burton and Mr.M:
Pyramid: North side still Icy, SE side -mostly- has gone the cycle, but it was in the clouds until ~11 on Sat and constant wind didn't let it soften for us when we skied it around 12:30. Bet it could have been great if sunny/warm/no wind. Anything Northerly, Easterly above 9k was teeth chatteringly icy. Since the normal winter route was burned, we started from Rocky Canyon and the trail was snow free until we started skinning maybe 200vert ft before the clearing/creek crossing around 7k.
The traverse was really nice, with the view constantly changing as you cross into new canyons, etc. And we skied/skated from the Summit of Pyramid all the way to Susie lake, where we put our skins back on, not too far from Tallac.
Tallac: Cathedral bowl felt like it had just refrozen when we skied it around 4:30, but i'm guessing it would have been good corn if we hit it an hour or so earlier. We were able to ski down to the summer trailhead- some dry tooling and schwacking below 7k, then dry walk on the road back to 89(the road was gated at 89). The high traverse back to the Spring creek side still had tracks, so if I were to do cathedral again soon, I'd prolly go that way (though I'm sure that side would have had it's own challenges)
Looking north from the summit of Pyramid towards Tallac:
SE side of Pyramid:
Looking back at Ralston, Pyramid, Peak 9686:
Desolation from Lake Aloha, Lake LaConte:
The SE Corn run from Jacks down to Heather Lake looked good:
N Side of Cracked Crag looks fun when/if conditions are right:
Looking back at Angora, Desolation:
Cathedral bowl on Tallac: refrozen corn was no problemo for Mrs. Jack Burton:
I'm not sure what this poor (un-named) soul was thinking, but I'd bet it was: "All that work, no powder, no corn, who's idea was this trip anyway?"

I think they're just so tired of accidents every time it snows more than a quarter inch (which hasn't happened in a while!) they're being more aggressive with the stuff. It definitely seemed that way back in December.

The Official 19/20 Tahoe Ski Snowboard Thread. Plus bonus Bootfitting Recs!
Brining the roads:
In the foothills, they’ve been brining the roads before forecasted storms. Makes a mess of cars/trucks that drive through it when it’s still dry out. Looking online, I can’t tell if it’s corrosive. Also, my observation was that they seem to be running fewer plows. I’m not sure if that’s related. Also, unclear if the pre applied brine is supposed to keep the roads from freezing or making it easier for plowing.
I agree!
Yesterday, I found that the sun is now high enough for me to sunburn if out all day on snow.

Many of the roads get salted (I think powdork is right about mag chloride, and that shit is nasty), and not just if it snows. Pretty much any time there is a cold inversion with any chance of freezing fog, which happens pretty often along 80 and 89 by the river, the roads get salted. West shore also gets it pretty often. You definitely don't want that stuff to stay on your vehicle for long, and you will never get it off the undercarriage, no matter how much you hit it with the pressure washer. You can see what it does to the trees along the highways, most of them are orange from the plows throwing salty snow on them all winter. It's surprising that Lahontan Water Board allows it in the basin, though I've been told that they prefer it to sand, and Cal-Trans is insistent on using one or the other.

it is supposed to melt the layer within 1" or so off the road either keeping it from icing up if that's what you get OR to make plowing easier if you get more snow. Not sure what they're getting here but there is a standard of noncorrosiveness used in the PNW and I can't imagine Ca not using it. In Colorado, the state requires the solution to be 70% less corrosive than rock salt.
The trees along the highway suffer from a combo of the drought years, and the long term effects of MgCl which inhibits the roots' ability to absorb water exacerbating the droughts effects. Also damage from the augurs which are throwing a high speed mixture of ice, rocks , snow and MgCl at them.powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.
