Snow skied great yesterday after drying out with the cold temps Monday night.

Stayed cold today with intermittent snow showers on the south shore, snow was surfy and fun

Homewood just announced that the Ellis chair is broken and done for the season. The south side will still be open but skiers will have to take a shuttle back to the main lodge.

Any word of what mechanical has killed the chair?

Went to Castle cirque and thought it was pretty lame. Cold, windy, windboard to ice to occasional stashes. I bailed after a half a run. Some boarders were riding lines to skier's left of me and they made it look pretty dank so YMMV. Wind seemed east but was more N/NW in the cirque but the softer snow was on skier's right in the chutes. Way back was nasty breakable. Only way to ski it was to let skis run their natural arc or super-high energy jump n' crunch. Beautiful tho, as always.

What?? Are they doing something to compensate their pass holders? That’s a pretty significant lift there.
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

I haven’t heard anything yet. Definitely no word on any comp w the announcement which didn’t go over well on the FB page. I would imagine they will have to reconsider. No one seemed particularly happy about shuttling back to the main lodge for some reason

Utah local out in Tahoe for the weekend. Is it worth spending (an extra) 90$ to ski squaw over Kirkwood, heavenly or north star?

Any other hints for a first timer to the Tahoe area?

    Too vague.
If you're in N.Lake, skiing NS, yes, prolly.
If you're in S.Lake, skiing KW and HV, no, prolly not.
Somewhat depends on life goals and disposable income as well.

Staying in south lake, willing to drive.

Disposable income isn’t unlimited, but life goals are to ski fun shit.

Sounds like the answer is to ski Kirkwood and HV, given the base and current conditions, skiing squaw won’t be really skiing squaw

Heavenly and Kirkwood. No reason to drive up to Squalpine, especially on a weekend.

If your pass allows you to ski kirkwood on saturday many local passes are blacked out but still good at heavenly so kirkwood is a good call but arrive promptly.

Alpine delivered on Wednesday. Temps stayed cool all day, hardly anyone on the hill, and this was a bit of a surprise......

Did the High Traverse all the way out and came up in this. Wasn’t expecting any fresh turns.

Fun turns, and deep enough that I didn’t hit bottom. Did a couple more laps and managed to find untracked each run. Better than I was expecting.

Ski Kirkwood Saturday. Enjoy the warmth. Follow the sun. Plenty of sunny gnar aspects that will soften up this weekend, including the fingers, nose and maybe ever lower cirque.

Ski HV on Sunday. Lower elevation and more sun exposure. It is supposed to drop from a high in the 50s at 8k Saturday to a high in the 30s and windy on Sunday. HV has miles of groomers in the sun.

Not worth the money and time to go to Squaw. Conditions aside, there will be about 87 times as many people at Squaw compared to Kirkwood.

Leave SLT by 7 and you’ll park within 100 feet of the main frontside lift at KW.

I’ll be there Saturday with my 8 year old. Send me a PM if you want to hook up for a few laps and we can show you the lay of the land and point you in the direction of some gnar.
