In France to ski I hope. Let me know when you're back. I'll let my kid do the ski-off--him on his ultralight BC setup, you on whatever ski you want.
(Reminds me of a ski-off that never happened. Woman I trained with, skinny little thing but marvelous skier, was challenged by an anesthesiologist double her weight. Problem was, she wanted to race on West Face in bumped out conditions, he wanted the Mountain Run.)

We're buying passes daily to have some freedom. I wanted to do this as a storm-chasing trip, but with work travel we had to pick a week to make it happen.
PM if you want Rose tickets when you're here. I'd have to meet you at the resort ticket window - that's how their promo works.

Can’t be too much snow in a classic terrain trap, but just enough to cover up and stick to the melt freeze crust

One of these days you should try the Pyrenees. I'm in Barèges/la Mongie, fantastic resort. If you like couloirs, it's Paradise.

Take the lifts, skin for an hour and couloirs everywhere.
And nobody skis them, untracked for a week after a storm.

I used to ski Chamonix, Verbier etc, but for lift accessed couloir skiing, Barèges beats then all.

And Maritime snowpack, so much lower avie danger.

I have a thread on skiing here.

And ####$#### old goat, I'm sure your son skis better than me, I'm not that good.

I just like to ski steep and narrow.

But sending in a ringer is the only way I can win a ski off. (I like couloirs too, but probably not as steep or as narrow as you.)

Worthy thread to check out if you have not seen it, if like me I rarely visit the TR forum

Nice one Gimpy, that's my favorite conditions to hit that line a few inches of pow on a nice smooth consolidated base

Keep your heads on a swivel over the next few days, the facets below the Jan 4 crust are the type of persistent weak layer that Tahoe typically doesn't have to deal with. Stay safe out there.

    These are definitely beacon-inbounds conditions.

Even with a foot plus, if you haven’t been out in the past week be careful of the lingering wind-scoured death ice that has shown up inconsistently and in spots you might not expect. I nearly made intimate friends with a tree at Sugar Bowl yesterday. It looked just like wind buff.
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

Just started to snow in Galena at 12:45 pm. If your in Reno, my advice is get out before the commute hits this afternoon. It's gonna be messy. I'm riding today out on the couch, making plans for tomorrow. Rose, Alpine or a late night/early morning run to Mammoth? I know the answer will come to me.

brilliant in its simplicity. it's definitely important to have enough speed to make it down to the flats. don't want to be sleeping all hilter kilter on an incline

Driving out of the Wood today was a thrilling experience.
Three rigs had cut tracks in Meiss Meadow, but I struggled to maintain headway in the 16+”. I bailed out to Blue Lakes SnoPark. Only a foot or so. Circled the lot a dozen times trying to pack it. Not much gain. Too light.

There were little animal tracks around the rig the last time I looked out. Must have liked the steak odors I was making.
Last night the shape with the reflecting eyes in the meadow looked feline, too, definitely not a coyote.

    I love it out here.

Left SF at noon with no traffic until Colfax where we waited around an hour for 80 to pop. 6 hour drive to Squaw...a bit white knuckling over the pass but not bad into Truckee. Looks like snow has stopped. Family pow day tomorrow...stoked.

First year with an Ikon pass, haven't been able to get out much yet this season but digging Squalpine in the winter so far (previously only ridden in spring/summer). So. Much. Terrain. Trying to get acquainted with it all, anyone know where I can buy a copy of Squallywood?

Some clips from Tuesday off KT, Shirley, and Sibo. Pow and boilerplate and no way to tell them apart in the flat light made it pretty spicy. I edited out my blue ice of death mishaps, now it almost looks like I know what I'm doing

Tomorrow looks cold and deep, super stoked to get after it!
