Watched a huge plane dropping retardant yesterday in the high country, made 3 passes while out there, was smoking big time yesterday, today I don’t see any smoke.
Endless line of cars coming into town today, looks like another busy weekend, I’ve pretty much gone in full lockdown again, only public place I go now is the grocery store.Last edited by TahoeBC; 07-10-2020 at 06:45 PM.

That was the VLAT or Very Large Air Tanker. My guess was what you saw was the DC-10 flying out of Sac. Approximate capacity is 10,000 gallons of retardant per drop. Cost per drop with flight time from Sac is roughly $10k.
Here’s a few pics from initial attack on Monday.
Fire was up and running as we drove South from Gardnerville.
395 closed in both directions as the fire was established on both side of the HWY.
Fire making a hard push down on to the houses by Rae Mae. The lights in front of the flames were the last of the residents fleeing.
Tuesday morning firing operation along 395. Compare the flame heights to the engines, which are 10-12 feet tall for perspective. It was a ripper for 24 hrs or so. All quiet now.

Went skiing up on Hawkins Tuesday since I knew it would have a good view of the fire too
The very large orange tanker flew directly over on its way back and forth from sac. It would make multiple drops once on scene though

Lake “Tahoe” itself is the most prominent CA example of renaming places and natural features to wipe away the stinking appellation of a racist (and a traitor). The original official name of our dear lake of the sky was Lake Bigler, named in the 1850s for CA’s 3rd governor. During his time as governor he was a virulent anti-Chinese racist, but that’s not what lost him the honor of our lake’s name. No, it was the fact that after leaving the governorship he became an outspoken Confederate sympathizer and argued that CA should secede from the union to join the slave-holding Confederacy. People and maps started using the name Tahoe in the late 1860s or 70s, but the CA legislature didn’t officially change the name to Tahoe til 1945!

Need an assist. Any Reno / Tahoe mags have a bear canister I could borrow for about a week starting next weekend? USFS and interagency offices are closed to public / not renting them, and all usual sources are backordered (assume this is because of office closures)
