Great Basin NP Beta
Thinking of going camping next weekend. I see that the campsites range from 7500-10,500'. Anyone familiar with the Park, or been there at the end of Sept.? Lehman caves, star gazing, bristlecone photography and Wheeler Peak exploration are musts.

I was there last September, loved it. Hiked to the top of Wheeler, the view was awesome, the whole hike was. Great aspens, but those might be over by the end of Sept. The campsites were filled when I was there, might be worth checking ahead. But you can dry camp on BLM land nearby. The star gazing is fantastic. Ely blows goats, but it’s okay for supplies.
But here’s my hot tip. The nearby town of Baker has the restaurant/bar surprise of all time, Kerouac’s. You have got to check it out.

Usually go there once a year or so on our way to Moab. Usually camp in the uppermost part of Baker Creek campground, close to the creek.
Bring water. They tend to shut off the faucets if nights are cold.Know of a pair of Fischer Ranger 107Ti 189s (new or used) for sale? PM me.

Very cool place, figuratively and literally this time of year. Cave is cool, but badly damaged. Hike to the summit is a must. Some good rock art in the region if you can smooth talk the ranger out of the location. I did, but missed the turn so never got there. There is another site on the road to I-15. The place is about in the middle of nowhere as you can get, so dark sky, high altitude and desert air make for good stars.

We showed up once with making reservations for the cave and they were sold out for the day. I think you can buy in advance, or maybe it won't be too crowded in late Sept.

I don't mind Ely. Its pretty typical of a Nevada mining town in that it has a few casinos and restaurants in town, but what puts Ely ahead of most Nevada mining towns is that they are working at developing a mountain biking trail system in the area and it's surrounded by cool desert mountain ranges. Most of the mtb trails I rode were a lot of fun. Cave Lake state park looks alright and North Schell Peak in the Schell Creek Range is an Ultra Prominent Peak if you are into that sorta thing.
Great Basin National Park is cool, I think you've mostly covered it as far as attractions and things to do there. I'd check out Ipapah Peak on the way there/back. That area looks cool too and isn't much of a detour if you are in the area with some time on your hands.
