Link I posted said they do 10k rpm easily in race cars. The vid explains the exact difference between normal piston engines. Pretty fun 15min watch really.

Pic isn’t mine but same year I think. Was a fun car for a couple years. Sold it to get a truck. The choke was a little finicky in cold morning starts but it drove well in snow since you almost sit over the rear wheels. Plenty of power.

HS back in the mid 70's a buddy used to always be driving RX2''s & 3's cuz his dad was the sales manager at a Mazda dealer
another buddy had his dads datzun 260 so they would drag and it was pretty close, the triumph TR6 was also in that same class of speed but the rotary Mazda sedans looked more like econobox's than sports cars
I remember they were so smooth, buddy was sitting in an RX 2 in neutral holding a steady high revs for about 15 sec's which didnt sound very stressful on the engine and then he said to us " so its redlined right now "
too bad the rotary ate engine sealsLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

The eccentric shaft of a Mazda rotary spins three times faster than the rotors, so the number on the tach is 3x the actual rotor rpm. It's smooth because it's much straighter than a conventional crankshaft.
The early carburetted 12A was rev-limited by virtue of insufficient breathing, and the fuel-injected 12A and 13B had ECU rev-limiting (basically to protect everything on the accessory belt system). Both were easy to remedy if you wanted to race the thing.
