Switching over to a heat pump system with the Model Y introduction really helped Tesla's cold weather performance. Preconditioning before driving helps too. The real world range is still different, but at least it's relatively grounded in reality.

250 mi with those requirements is still a stretch by a little bit. One will see a pretty solid hit going 70+ mph and winter tires can reduce efficiency. Dropping to an 18" rim makes it a negligible difference from what I hear though. Add in a just-in-case buffer (20%) and I'd be comfortable predicting 180±20 mi from 100%. That's about 2.7mi/Kwh for reference.

Personally I have no interest in driving 3-4 hrs without stretching my legs so I'd take 15 at a convenient fast charger along the way and add an extra 70-100 miles of winter range while doing so.

Ultimately I haven't found using a BEV as a road trip vehicle that limiting, though everyone's use case is different, it just requires a little more forethought in really remote areas.

What I do find limiting is ground clearance, since there really aren't any reasonably priced high-range BEVs with north of 7-8" down the center line sans modifications. Keeping my fingers crossed that Rivian changes that with the R2 and R3x.

    Electric car thread

Scout relaunch as an EV brand is fun to see. Hopefully a legit Rivian competitor

Edit: 300mi range +200mi with optional onboard gene is an interesting take.

VW may be on to something.
I’d prefer to have an ID 3 or whatever e-sedan they could bring over, or make here, but SUV’s are what people want. Self driving SUV’s or what ever are the opposite of the manual AWD wagon I want.

I wonder if the used Tesla market soon gets flooded as disgruntled Liberal owners choose to dump their Muskmobile?

This has been happening for awhile now. Not sure if this will help accelerate it more. Guess we'll have to wait and see, but there's going to be more than enough right wing bros who are ready to hop in whereas EV's were for libs in the past. I guess all in all good for ev adoption and infrastructure?

The ones I know (weirdly just talked to a coworker about this exact topic this morning) have zero desire to get rid of their beloved car....but they refuse to buy another one. You don't need owners dumping their cars to push down the market, you just need a large share of the buyers to stop buying.

And tesla has been flooding the market themselves with a bunch of big price cuts (probably to keep sales up in the face of liberals refusing to support Musk) which also pushes down the used market.

Indeed! Wife's talking minivan in the future (rad!) but she was asking if there any other vehicles that would fit the bill. I used to ignore the Model X because they were silly expensive on the used market BUT I just looked them up and now I can get one for less than I spent on my used wagon.

    Anybody here have one? Thoughts?

One of the largest arguments against EVs used to be their unaffordability, but that has certainly changed recently in regard to the used market! I've been browsing Autotrader for used EVs from Hyundai, Mercedes, Tesla, and across the board they've become quite affordable. Kills that whole argument. Mercedes appeals to me due to their class-leading battery warranty so will definitely give them serious consideration someday. I particularly like the EQS. 10-year/155,000-mile battery warranty! Perhaps a CPO one could be sweet. Especially with the 70% depreciation hit they can suffer from.

    I'm kinda digging these too.

Pure electric models offer up to 350 miles of range. Scout’s extended range models offer 500 miles of range or more through a built-in, gas-powered generator. Even in the middle of nowhere, you can still get there. 1, 8, 9

You can’t put a roof box on an x due to the stupid and fragile doors so skis have to go inside or on the hitch.

Also the doors on the pre-2022 model are notoriously failure-prone. Even Post-2022 I wouldn't trust the assembly and seals to handle ice well long-term. I've gone through at least 5 door handles on my S that failed d/t ice.

Do these guys all really hope to build a new car company? Or are they angling to be acquired by a GM or Ford? Not Scout specifically….just all these startups. Looks awesome but imma need support when it breaks in 3 years.

Scout is Volkswagen Group, not a startup.

FWIW, Scout Motors’ plans to sell direct to consumer like Tesla. VW dealers are suing to try and stop it

It also sounds like the Scout will use Rivian’s x tech which would be nice. Love to get one but just too wide for our narrow driveway/carport/garage. I’m waiting to see how the R pans out. Want something the exact size of my [emoji6]th gen Runner.

Yeah - kinda a weird move.

Selling the Scout thru VW brings an entire new customer into the dealership.

I’m sure the dealerships are saying “ok, then don’t come to us for help when there is a warranty claim or recall issue…”

Carmakers would all love to alleviate themselves of the dealership model, but dealerships are some of the biggest lobbyist to get states to pass/maintain laws that protect their business.

Good to know! Thanks for the intel. Perhaps we'll just stick with the wagon for ski trips then. Maybe just get a sedan for city duty.

On the higher end of things (not that I'm there financially), I've been seeing more Lucid Airs around town. Those actually look REALLY nice in person. Seem pretty well built. Nice interiors. Starting to depreciate quite nicely too I might add. Seeing nice examples on Autotrader in the 50/60s range.
