Crew was above deck and on watch. This is a top notch operation. I've got a dive buddy out on the sister boat Vision right now.

    Absolutely heartbreaking.

from the looks of this diagram...it goes out to sea, and stays out a while?

    Unhappy

They seemed to be reporting that the DOOR WAS LOCKED! ABC Nightly News was playing some of the radio conversation where the coast guard was asking the crew member to go back and unlock the door so they could get out..

Pretty sure we have a new "saddest headline". How horrific!

It looks like a live aboard dive boat. Never been on one, but you basically live on the boat and dive.

Yes, these are multi-day charters. This is a top notch outfit. I can't imagine what happened, but you're not locked up below deck, there's no oxygen tanks, and fire suppression systems are present in the machinery spaces.

You can see the friggin smoke detector in the pic above. The CG is all over your ass inspecting these boats. My friend sent out a FB post this morning that he was okay on the sister boat, and they were coming in early from a trip out to Cortez Bank. He and a lot of other people on the boat had friends on the Conception this weekend. This is absolutely horrifying.

That place is cool, been there a bunch of times.

So has the USS Enterprise. Once.

Edit: vibes to the dive boat victims.

California diving boat crew reveals passengers may have been 'locked inside' burning vessel

The captain confirms he is from the craft and says, “There’s 33 people on board the vessel on fire. They can’t get off.”

The Coast Guard worker responds, “Roger. Are they locked inside the boat? Roger. Can you get back on board and unlock the doors so they can get off? Roger. You don’t have any firefighter gear at all, no fire extinguishers or anything?”

    The captain’s reply is unclear.

The Coast Guard operator says, “Is this the captain of the Conception?”

    “Roger,” the man says.

The Coast Guard worker asks, “Was that all the crew that jumped off?”

    The unidentified captain replies, “Roger.”

The operator asks, “Is the vessel fully engulfed now?”

Kinda sounds like the hatch was locked/latched from the outside

Sigh. Please, just stop and wait for a full report.

You haven't been around boats much, right?

My brother has been diving on that boat since his UCSB days in the 80ís, probably 25 times between their sister ships. He was online this weekend looking to book his first overnight with his 14 yr old daughter. Iíve dived with one of its employees before with him in Maui.

Top notch outfit. Apparently there is an escape hatch in the rear before the engine compartment. So he thinks it must have been a quick and catastrophic event like a gas line leaking and exploding. Blocking the escape hatch and kitchen which is between the main access and bunks.

He said this is not Mexico, Coast guard keeps an eye on them.

I sank a boat in the channel once going out to the channel islands and floated around in my wetsuit for an hr in December waiting for the Cg. Lucky we had a loran and radio back then. Dumbest day of my life and lucky to be alive.

There is an escape hatch, or was. In the rear of the sleeping quarters, before the engine compartment. That was the first question I had for my brother. He also said there is always a crew member awake and on anchor watch.

There was no time is my guess.smoke inhalation etc.

Generally speaking, captain and crew have much higher survivability rates than passengers.

The idea of women and children first in maritime disasters is mostly a myth that perhaps came about from the Titanic sinking.

Youíre jumping to conclusions. Seems more likely that he was referring to the condition of the boat post explosion / fire. They couldnít get out because of where the fire was burning.

I canít imagine a scenario where the hatches to the cabin would be locked. Thatís boating 101.
