Air and Space Museum starting 7 year renovation

40 planes, including the X15, are being moved to storage while the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is being renovated which is supposed to take 7 years. The entry hall in the museum is my favorite place in DC--the Wright Flyer, Spirit of St Louis, Glenn's capsule, the X1 and x15 and a number of other famous aircraft all in one place. A lot of these planes will remain but not the X15. My kids liked the Air and Space too but they were more interested in the Battle of Midway exhibit and the simulator where they could try and land on a carrier.

One of my favorite places on earth. An amazing docent there explained in great detail how Armstrong manually landed with almost no fuel on the moon. (Now well documented in “First Man”.). He let me touch the LM, so I could feel how thin it was.

I love this place too. The annex out by the airport is even better though. Seven years seems like an awfully long time even for a complete tear-down.

in deference to the confluence of history to be seen in the vicinity, this was always worth a lap.

The overflow place in Maryland is awesome too, I think it's open one day a year.

    Yup. This is adult work.

    - remodel of the exterior
    – structural steel modifications
    - new abstract wing shaped entry modeled after the old Da Vinci sketches.
    - New security system
    - HVAC replacement
    - storm water harvesting cisterns
    - new lighting
    - rooftop PV
    - complete interior remodel

All while keeping the place open. You have to do it in phases, complete one space before closing the next. All the exhibit pieces (priceless large aircraft) need to be protected, moved out, stored, brought back...

    Like I said. Adult work.

I think we can agree it's not being done at a hurried pace.

Private or public, keeping a super popular 700,000sf facility open while doing a full exterior/interior/mech remodel is going to take long long time.
