Hurricanes 2019 (and other Tropical Shit storms)

Their database says a hurricane has never reached Raleigh.

The only thing close was in 1970, and by the time it got to Raleigh it was categorized as a Tropical Depression.

    Shitty roof jobs?

If given the choice of good, better, best when buying shingles, pay up for the best shingles. Sure they cost a bit more and add weight, but in the long run its cheaper than replacing roofs.

Umm that's probably only referring to landfall as defined. Quite a few have still been named storms this far inland. but none made landfall here because we're 150 miles in from the shore.

We got Helene 2000, Fran in 1996, Floyd, Dennis in 1999, Matthew, Florence, Hanna 2008. Fran was a cat 1 when she got here for sure. Most of those others were still full named tropical storms.

How many hurricanes a state gets seems to depend on how much shoreline the state has, which points out how local many hurricanes seem to be. Florida in particular can get hit from the E, the W, and the S. W

So the city of Raleigh NC keeps getting hit by by hurricanes and somehow the State Government of North Carolina does not know about it ???

    No. It was not.

Per your state's database Fran was downgraded from hurricane status when it was 40.2 miles away from the city limits of Raleigh NC.

Maybe Raleigh will be a beach front city in a few decades. You have that going for you.

The 2003 storm flooded lower Manhattan and closed much of the subway system. NYC has been u see water more than Raleigh due to coastal flooding due to tropical system. Hands down. The question is which city had gotten more wind. More regularly, I’d assume Raleigh. Greater velocity, I’d wager a better on NYC. Tropical systems break apart very quickly after moving on shore. The wind field grows in size, but weakens substantially.

I too won’t bother looking up the stats, cause really, who gives a fuck.

My point was that the waters just south of Long Island are not the cold North Atlantic. They can often be plenty warm to sustain a tropical system in late August and early September. It is a short window, but exist. The cold N Atlantic waters start just east and north of there, off of Cape Cod.
I don't get this steering effect you're using to claim Sandy was so different. Aren't all of these storms steered in one way or another by other systems? They don't exist on their own. This one stalled over the Bahamas because, for a day or two, it had no system moving it, right?

It sure fucked a bunch of shit up. Several tornadoes... FWIW there have been three or four tornado warnings already today and we're just on the edge of the outer bands of Dorian right now. I don't expect much other than that though.. Just like a normal spring day in Oklahoma..

So now tornados count as hurricanes ? Nice to know that...

    Raleigh NC = 0 hurricanes + 1 tropical depression since 1851

    NYC = 46 hurricanes + 32 tropical storms/depressions since 1851

    Not even close. Benny wins.

Looks like Dorian's gonna miss NYC entirely, so based on BMills's link I gotta give Sun Dum Jong 1 and Benny 0 on this one.

Agreed if we're only counting the eyewall. If we include outer bands, which still have gusts well over 70mph and spawn tornadoes all over then maybe not. Lived in NY 10 years and experienced one good one. I guess I have to admit that Gloria was just as bad, maybe worse than Fran. But here we get nicked or somewhat pounded 2-3 times every freaking year.

Crazy reports out of the Bahamas from American survivors now just returning. People looting and shooting each other over food and water, no authorities present.

I would definitely ski with Jong Guy. He is probably fun. With the IKON Pass I have already been getting PM's from people headed to Big Sky this winter. I would take Jong Guy to a couple shacks and get him good to go.
