Two years in a row of evacuating (I am a hurricane magnet). Love the coastal SE but gonna move 2-3 hours inland and make trips to the coast to surf and kite instead of living on the barrier island.

Oh, and fuck the Weather Channel. How is it news that Jim Cantore can find the one spot with splashing water so we can watch him wear goggles and get drenched?

That will also put you 3 hours from 5,000 feet elevation skiing. Nothing above the tree line but better than midwest..

I think the new tax law states that if you spend more than 30% of the year in that location you can count your good teeth against that of the general local population.

Florida woman wraps home in plastic to protect it as Hurricane Dorian approaches

With hurricane Dorian churning as a strong hurricane, people who plan to evacuate are taking some unique precautions. Brittany Vidal is taking the unique approach of plastic wrapping her home, securing it with close to 300 sandbags and duct tape.

“We just started out by doing 6 mil plastic all around the house,” Vidal said.

Vidal’s home flooded during both Matthew and Irma.

She’s considering raising the house but is trying the plastic wrap for now.

They cancelled school tomorrow and no doubt Friday.. We're not even in the tropical storm strength cone. Such lightweights LOL. I'm going to the office for a least half the day.

My friend was bitching about school in the Raleigh area being cancelled tomorrow, two weeks after they moved from NY to NC. A warm welcome to hurricane country.

NY gets hurricanes. Maybe more than Raleigh.

    Yeah, no.

Can you even see the rest of the world from New York adjacent? Or is Raleigh part of the New York Metro like Baltimore?

Well Raleigh's pretty far inland and NYC is on the coast, so they'd be quite different. A lot of hurricanes hit the NC coast, how many still-strong hurricanes affect Raleigh is a smaller number.

And NYC is firmly in cold water North Atlantic where the likelihood of a hurricane affecting the area is likely still less than anywhere in the inland coastal SE.

It’s more of a clap back at the worldview from Times Square. Or in this case, Connecticut.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Benny, but his view is severely bent to the point he includes MD as part of the NYC Metro.

We’re talking hurricanes, not Nathan’s hot dogs.

Water temps along the NY and Jersey shore can be in the low 80s this time of year. Still plenty of juice for the storm. Sandy had no issues striking NYC with force. I suspect NYC has seen stronger winds from tropical storms than Raleigh. I mean, you are talking about a city well inland.

Exactly my point re: recency bias. Not doing much more than a google it appears that the recency bias that goes hand in hand with the NYC worldview of Benny that I’m alleging is accurate.

Prior to Sandy, it appears the last actual hurricane to hit NYC was Isabel in 2003. 16 years ago.

And Sandy also was aided by the miraculous combination of a high tide and a Nor’easter.

I won’t even bother looking up inland SE Atlantic storm effects to compare. No offense.

As someone who lived on Long Island for 10 years and now resides west of Raleigh I would say not quite. Or, it could be a few more per decade both places due to climate change?
