Places you should go within an 8hr drive of Phoenix

In anticipation of being socked in with work in PHX for the next two months, trying to seize this weekend to take a road trip. Leaving tonight, back Monday night. Also, if I can find somewhere with decent fishing I'm taking the fly rods.. been too long

Where would you go within an 8hr-ish radius?

Some places on the short list:
Telluride (been there once in the winter, it was pretty cool)
Death Valley - probably too hot
Sequoia NF - a bit outside the radius but don't know when the next time I'd go would be
San Diego - don't know much about it, some people seem to like it. others not so much
Zion NP - been once, only for half a day. probably a gong show this weekend
    Taos?
    ...

    Feel free to PM

Could you get up onto the green river in 8 hours? That would satisfy the fishing component

Owens Valey/Lone Pine/Bishop - fish, hike, hot springs, ancient bristlecones

Sequoia NP - access is from the SJ valley and is well outside of your radius, but you can access from the east, just not very far into it without crossing Whitney and friends.

    Joshua Tree NP

I assume you already know all these places and they don't sound like what you're looking for but for the benefit of a non-local who might come across this thread, explore the desert--Sonoran Desert NM, Canyon de Chelly, Betatakin and Keet Seel in the Navajo NM, the BLM canyon between Phoenix and Tucson whose name I can't remember, Syacamore Canyon down near the border. Organ Pipes NM. Monument Valley.

I like the Puerto Penasco suggestion although it's been 30 years since we've been there.

About 9 hours will get you into Bishop from where you can day hike into the east side of the Sierra opposite Sequoia NP. Should be good fishing. Or Big Pine a little closer to the south. Further south--Independence, Lone Pine--the trailheads tend to be either too low in elevation or in the restricted Whitney Zone (need restricted permit even for day hiking.)

I can't believe I missed it: TJ for a donkey show. And the old disappearing kidneys trick.

    Define serious

Probably don't qualify as HUGE a fly fisherman as someone like roos, but have been doing it my whole life. Never out here though.

Research fishing up on the mogollon rim outside of Payson, much closer and from my understanding some fine fishing.

Then hit the San Juan or the Dolores, both easy off the road style rivers.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
