Buy a tent and sleep on the beaches or a campground.

Maybe...but if this is the case wouldn't Motel 6 be super expensive?
Good advice. I do like tents but this little trip has a little different dynamic. We will see. Trying to find a balance that works for us.
Some recent tent stays.

I would think that forcing a 17 year old to sleep in a crib might cause lasting trauma, both physical and mental.

I thought we'd make him sleep on the couch at night and teach him to surf by day. Good preparation for the next few years of his life.

Call or email the management and explain the situation. Book elsewhere if they don't change. If it's the off season, you'll likely prevail.
Having said that isn't Portugal already dirt cheap? Check out agriturismos as well. My best holidays have been there.

Don't they offer larger family rooms? (rather than having to book two separate rooms with en suite)
Also
A lot of hostels offer family rooms. (but usually not as nice, and don't have the views etc)Gone fishing

I have met uglymoney's kid. He is a very athletic 6'2". He stands a better chance of passing for 20 than for 15.

Why not just book as two (you and daughter) and then check in while he’s outside or on a sofa in lobby.
If anyone says anything, just let them know that you son was a last minute add on as a pick-me-up after his girlfriend just died in a horrific Beirão poisoning incident.
Sent from my iPhone using TGR ForumsIt makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Depending on the hotel, many times the hotel will ask for the passport of all people in the room when you check in. And they do tend to be strict on the three person policy, we’ve travelled a bunch with two kids in Europe and there are some places we’ve either had to upgrade or pick a different hotel.

Thanks for all the replies, serious and humorous. I feel clued in now. The place won't negotiate on the kid so we are going to grab an apartment down the road. Not as nice, but I'd rather be out and about anyway.

Not true. I've been in plenty of European hotels and they are just like hotels everywhere else. If it's a big one, there is so much movement that they have no idea who is coming or going. Stayed in several that have direct elevator access from the garage to the floors with rooms bypassing the lobby. Your statement is true though for smaller hotels where the only access is by the front desk and the staff are clued in to all of the guests.
We pretty much airbnb it now as it is usually cheaper to accommodate our family of 5.

Yep. Coastal decompression. Trigger pulled on the apartment. Tackling our Lisbon plan next.
Thanks SIJ. We are stoked. Blew a shit ton of FF miles to make it happen. We'll be back in JH in March this year for basement whiskey shots. Ski you then.
